Do the ship studio models still exist?

Okay, I "thought" I had read the incident upon this particular page at the "Hero Comm(unicator)" site, but I no longer see it. Unless the site has a page listing the various edits made over time, there's no way I can prove I really did see it.

However, there does seem to be published accounts about a union issue. In its article about Chang, this Memory Alpha page quotes the Justman and solow book "Inside Star Trek: the Real Story", even siting the page numbers where the passage was retrieved.

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Wah_Chang

It doesn't state the destruction of the Romulan ship miniature, so it's possible that element was an embellishment by fans, one that HeroComm originally posted and later retracted.

In short, h3ll, I don't know what's real anymore. It's possible I'm just delusional.

Sincerely,

Bill

EDIT: Ah, I see that Maurice has provided a source for the anecdote. So I guess I really did read something like that after all.

I think that most of us have seen the photo of an Enterprise model on a stand, on a table or desk, next to Gene Roddenberry, was that the original three-footer? And what became of that model? Did one of his kids really throw it into the family swimming pool?

I never knew how detailed the Botany Bay model actually was, thanks spockboy for posting those pictures.

I never realized the Botany Bay was made of wood, though now that I look at those photos, it seems kind of obvious from the way the sides of the cylinder are carved flat like the sides of a pencil. It's basically a log with stuff stuck to the sides, isn't it? (So would its commander be the log's captain? :D )

The Klingon and Tholian ships are wooden too, but the textured gold-colored plates on the sides of the Tholian ship are something separate that's been affixed to the wood. Maybe some kind of foil?

I see the shuttlecraft is made of metal, though. I think I can see a weld where the roof is attached to the starboard side panel. And the front panel is missing!

Alot of models were made of wood back then, depending on size (which means weight). We used to use basswood (a lightweight and very fine-grained wood) all the time in our model-making class (back in the early 90s). Before plastic scale models were common they used to just have plans and you'd carve them out, something of a cottage industry in WWII to turn out aircraft recognition models.

A lot of detail on the Botany Bay that I missed when viewing. The stern view is a lot more interesting than the shots used in the episode.

Great pictures! @Spockboy. That makes me happy. The Planet Killer looks a bit off though. Is that the original or a recreation?

"Ahh, the courage of those early space pioneers... braving the unknown depths of space in ships made entirely of wood!"

As the caption says, it and the Constellation are Greg Jein's recreations. The original seems to have been pretty much made of foil, cellophane, and adhesive tape, and surely didn't last long after filming. They probably just crumpled it up and threw it away.

Those little flying radiator or antenna panels on the back look like they are same ones inset on the Enterprise engine pylons.

Yes, I have often fantasized about dumpster diving at Desilu back in 67 and finding the Planet Killer and who knows what else being thrown away (probably the Fesarius) :)

What's the story behind these models? Some of their details do not match the details I see in my film clips.

These pics have been acquired over years and years. You need to be specific about what doesn't match what :) Actually a picture comparison of the aforementioned details would be awesome! Start up a discussion?
The Klingon ship and the Aurora are the original wooden models as far as I know. The Botany Bay is definitely the original. I am not sure about the Shuttlecraft.

What does everyone else think?
Curious :)

Shaw hypothesizes that Robert Abel and Associates (who had apparantly been lent the model) tossed it thinking it was something built for Phase II, and which wasn't going to be needed for TMP.

Wow, what a terrible thought. I hope its in some Abel and Associates employee's basement in a box or something.

There is this great modeller named Shaw who made a beautiful replica of the 3footer (slighly different design from the 11 footer)
Here is a pic and some links...
