Do people still believe in Hell?

Can't help it... I mustn't...really, the temptation is too... Oh well, so be it...

As per Roddenberry in "The Cage," Hell is "a fable ... once heard in childhood."

As per Byrne and Harrison on Fear of Music, "Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens."

Hell (and heaven for that matter) are such childish and vapid black/white views of morality that I can't even think of anything clever to say about them. It's just so clearly bullshit.
Well, that depends on the religion. What about Purgatory? What about the seven circles? Surely those imply a more complex and mature vision of morality. I mean, they don't make a lot of sense upon close scrutiny, but they're not vapid or inept.

I've met a lot of people who believe in a versions of hell, happily, I am not one of them.

As for free will, I think that based on current understanding of brain function we need to redefine what we mean by the phrase.

Non-existence won't be bad, you won't be there anyway.
It will be if I can't keep up with the latest Trek shows and movie's that will happen without me being able to see them. Is it bad of me that year's ago when that "Heaven's Gate" cult killed themselves part of me wondered how any Trek fan could do that when you had ongoing trek shows still on tv. It was mentioned a lot how a lot of them had been Star Trek and Sci-Fi fans.
To me one of the worst things about the idea of dying and there being no afterlife is that it means your going to miss out on a lot of cool stuff and it seems unfair. Granted I am someone who thinks the only two things that matter in life is love and fun. Everthing else is a waste of time. Job doesn't matter because someone else will just take over and human dignity also doesn't matter because who really cares what people think of you that don't even know or care about you. People seem to waste so much time on things that they won't even recall years later. I remember once years ago getting into this big argument here on the TREKBBS were I even used personal insults, which is something I never do. Today I can't even recall why we were fighting or who I was fighting with. If it was such a dam important thing to actually feel anger about you think that would stay with you but instead it has disapeared into the either to never be thought about from both of us in any great detail.

You were content before you existed; you will be content when you longer exist.

You're born, you live and then you get snuffed the fuck out. Life is not fair; death is not fair. It just is. Welcome to reality.

Doesn't it take a emotion to feel content? I agree that it isn't fair but that doesn't mean it's something people should be fine with. People should be sad that they won't be able to enjoy planet earth once they are dead. Besides I am not someone who totally dismisses the idea of a God, just I don't think organized religion has any more of a clue to what is the real truth, anymore than anyone else. It's basically just a big "Who knows" to me. Nothing to feel secure about, in terms of a afterlife but it's still a nice concept to think might happen. If it doesn't then It's not like i'm going to be around to complain about it. I mean what I am going to do? Send a email to God? "Dear God, How dare you stop my exsitence. Not being sentient is not what I was expecting. I want you to fix my sitution, instantly!"

I'm hoping Heaven will be like flying my ship, The Rocinante, through the black hole, Cygnus X-1

A belief in an afterlife of eternal torment is a key element of the doctrine of many faiths, not just Christianity, but the number of religious adherents who truly believe that an afterlife of eternal torment exists has decreased.

It can make an interesting question about what motivates religious adherents, do they really love God and want to join him in Heaven or do they just or more want to avoid eternal suffering in Hell. They might admit that it doesn't really matter which motivation is stronger or what motivates people at all, just getting to what they feel is the right outcome.

A third category -- some just love God and their relationship with God in this life and don't think that much about what may or may not happen after they die.

Hell is stupid. It's the embodiment of "too much, too late."
Heaven, at least as I've heard it described by religious people, is Hell.

This.

Granted, I'm still agnostic. But the fundamentalist concept of Heaven and Hell is outrageously absurd.

That version of Hell from Supernatural where you wait in a line for eternity is far more terrifying than anything created by any religion.
