Do I need to watch all of Trek before watching the 2 new films?

You got off with ``Spock's Brain''? Man, they made me watch ``Force of Nature''.
You might also want to watch the original series episode The Trouble With Tribbles. You still won't know exactly what a tribble is, but you'll appreciate a bit (a tiny bit) more of the humor in STID. It's also one of the better TOS episodes.
Geez, I watched that for the first time in 20 years yesterday, and it was even worse than I remembered.
You should watch the film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan before watching Star Trek: Into Darkness. Then you'll either face-palm during Into Darkness, or you'll think what they did is really cool. I've discovered here that there is no in between and people are very passionate one way or the other about it. Either way, with Wrath of Khan you'll at least witness the original cast at their best in one of the best Trek films ever (the best in my opinion).
I liked TUC well enough, but the cast signoffs at the end was a bit too much schmaltz. It was sort of like at the end of the 1956 film The Bad Seed, where after "The End", they bring the main cast out for curtain calls and the male hero turns the little girl (about 11 at the time) over his knee and spanks her.
You must follow the rules of fandom! All Trek must be committed to memory in production order! No exceptions!

Gotta disagree. Call me a sentimental softie, but I love the sign-offs at the end of TUC. After all those years, a little schmaltz is not a bad thing--and gave the cast something of a curtain call.
I thought TUC was an OK movie, but put me down for really liking the sign-offs at the end, too. A nice little flourish to go out on. I teared up.
On topic, as I think about it, watch ST09 and STID first, and if you like them, then maybe you'd want to sample some of the older stuff.
Just to clarify, I'm not saying there's no in-between when it comes the overall opinion of the films. I'm just saying people who I have seen opine about STID either think what they did with it as it relates to TWOK is really cool or they hate it. That's the thing I haven't seen an in-between on (the part if my post you didn't quote). I'm not trying to pretend. It just seems to me that most have strong opinions one way or another when it comes to those scenes.
I lean more towards Greg's viewpoint sure it might be a little schmaltzy but there is nothing wrong with a little bit every now and then.
I think it would fascinating to approach it from the new first. See this version of events and then go back and see the original.
It didn't bother me when I saw it in the theater. Maybe I'm just thinking too much and connecting it with old style movie making.

Not necessary to watch old Trek to see new Trek. Whomever told you that you had to watch old Trek first is feedin' you a load o' hooey.
My brain interpreted this as JGH saying "hooey" and it was awesome.
