Yes. If we had to watch "Spock's Brain", you have to watch "Spock's Brain".
Geez, I watched that for the first time in 20 years yesterday, and it was even worse than I remembered.Man, they made me watch ``Force of Nature''.
This is probably the worst thing to do. In fact, you probably shouldn't have even posted this. It establishes bias--not to mention kind of spoils it.You should watch the film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan before watching Star Trek: Into Darkness. Then you'll either face-palm during Into Darkness, or you'll think what they did is really cool. I've discovered here that there is no in between and people are very passionate one way or the other about it. Either way, with Wrath of Khan you'll at least witness the original cast at their best in one of the best Trek films ever (the best in my opinion).
Of course there's an in-between; it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. Whether or not TWoK is the best Trek movie is—same as with all the rest—a matter of individual opinion. I think Khan is better than The Undiscovered Country, but my opinion of TUC was never very high.I've discovered here that there is no in between and people are very passionate one way or the other about it. I liked TUC well enough, but the cast signoffs at the end was a bit too much schmaltz. It was sort of like at the end of the 1956 film The Bad Seed, where after "The End", they bring the main cast out for curtain calls and the male hero turns the little girl (about 11 at the time) over his knee and spanks her.

Gotta disagree. Call me a sentimental softie, but I love the sign-offs at the end of TUC. After all those years, a little schmaltz is not a bad thing--and gave the cast something of a curtain call.

I think it would fascinating to approach it from the new first. See this version of events and then go back and see the original. This is probably the worst thing to do. My question is, does it matter if I watch the two newer Star Trek films before the rest?

I lean more towards Greg's viewpoint sure it might be a little schmaltzy but there is nothing wrong with a little bit every now and then.
My brain interpreted this as JGH saying "hooey" and it was awesome. Not necessary to watch old Trek to see new Trek. Whomever told you that you had to watch old Trek first is feedin' you a load o' hooey.
