Do hyposprays hurt

Tcsfan

In star trek 2009 every time kirk gets a hypospray he says oww why I thought they didnt hurt

Well McCoy was jamming Kirk with the hypo pretty hard, but that was a running gag.

I remember the spray innoculations for measles we got in grade school back in the late 60's. They weren't as bad as needles. But on one occasion by the time I got back to class, my arm was bleeding. So they were not entirely benign.

To be fair, Kirk had so many things going wrong with him that it's possible a feather landing on him would have hurt.

That being said, I do seem to recall characters at least wincing when getting hypo'd.

It may of course also be that injecting as such doesn't hurt at all - but the stuff being injected may sting like hell...

Agreed. In TOS, we saw a few times where someone flinched, but that was usually due to them being surprised that the hypo was administered. Not all serums are tame; I'm sure a few probably sting on site. In nuTrek, I look at everything as purely hypothetical and won't consider anything that happens as "canon".

I've had a few vaccinations where the vaccination was more painful than the needle going in. I had a gamma globulin booster shot that hurt so bad I couldn't raise my arm for a day or two.

One of the shots Kirk got was when his hands were swollen so that may have caused some pain even with a hypospray.

Cardassian hyposprays do.When Dukat is about to get hypospraed by Kira or Bashir( I can't remember right now) he tightened his arm and shoulder like he is expecting pain

they may, though it depends on how the item is delivered. in TNG era, it seems the substance is delivered through the skin into the bloodstream, bypassing any nerves.

It's worth noting that a chemical is being forced through your pores. It seems to me that it might hurt a wee bit.

Except that there are nerves in the veins. Try giving someone IV diphenhydramine or any of a number of other common drugs without diluting it first. They won't say it's painless.

It may simply be that the hyposprays of STIX are not as advanced as the ones of TOS. The film is set 'before' (ignoring the time line alteration) the series, after all.

Just another detail Abrams changed for no real reason. Apparently they thought Kirk writhing in pain would be funny.

That's nothing. I remember when those cads Gene Rodenberry and Robert Wise replaced the Klingons with a totally different species. How did they explain it away? An Enterprise refit:rommie:
