Distribution outside the United States

I wonder how they'll deal international distribution - CBS All Access appies to USA only; presumably some regions could get Netflix/other online outlets, other countries might buy for traditional TV channels?

Surely they would have thought about international distribution, otherwise they'll have Trek fan from around the globe hounding them.

You'd hope so. Mind you, we still have no way to watch The Expanse in the UK. Syfy UK hasn't picked it up. Baffling. You'd hope that Star Trek would be different though. I'm sure Sky will have first dibs on it.

Yes, they have thought about it. The original press release said the show would be distributed internationally. Moonves has talked about international revenue helping to pay for the show. They haven't announced details because they're still likely negotiating contracts, but the show will be released internationally.

People really need to read the second paragraph of the original press release, heh.

I'm guessing they'll put it on network TV, or where ever they'd get the most money internationally.

oh yes didn't he say that international people have ALREADY expressed interest even though it hasn't started filming yet?

Sky1 was the home of first-run Star Trek in the UK throughout my lifetime from TNG to ENT but they also got a run on BBC 2 abnd Channel 4. Now though Star Trek's repeated on SyFy and CBS Action but those channels are not as 'big'

This is just the British POV in other countries it's different!!

I'd imagine the streaming market would be first choice these days rather than sky. That's the new and expanding market, and the show will be produced for streaming too.

They'll put it out fast as possible as through the web they know it will get illegal distribution, which they don't want

This doesn't seem to have phased Scfy, who haven't bothered/don't seem bothered that there's no way to legally get the Expanse outside the US/Canada. I do accept however, that Star Trek is hardly an unknown and new property like the Expanse.

For viewers outside of the US, CBS All Access isn't even an issue. The new Trek series will be presented just like previous Trek shows were, sold through syndication to individual TV markets that are interested in it.

I really hope the German rights end up with Netflix or Amazon rather than with Sky (which is very expensive & mostly sucks) or broadcast tv (which would likely only show a dubbed version).

But I would be very surprised if we don't get a (legal) way to see the episodes within a few days of their US premiere.

Possibly Sat1, TELE5 (currently showing TNG) and SKY will compete for the rights.

It'll be different in different countries. Syndication, etc.

Star Trek was broadcast on Star World in the Middle East and India. Would be great if the new series airs on the US release date here too.

I wouldn't be surprised if Star Trek ended up on one of the home based streaming options here in Australia. Neither DS9 nor Voyager did great on free to air (I don't think DS9 even aired) and it's not the sort of show that Australians really lap up. Unless they've found a way to do reality TV star trek. I can see it been a niche product that either Stan or Presto would be willing to pick up though. The other option is exclusive to Foxtel (our only real 'cable') but again, I can't see it been attractive enough for that.

At least that's what I'm hoping. I'll sign up to either if they add the new Star trek.

Are we sure that the overseas licenses are actually for TV at all? Amazon Prime Germany has everything Trek but Animated...I could totally see them picking the new show up.

We're not sure at all. It could go anywhere internationally. All that CBS said was it will be distributed internationally. I'm not sure I see Amazon, because I don't know if they'd sign an international deal excluding the US, but other streaming services are possible.
