Distractions from other media

4of11

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
First off, I absolutely love the new movie; however, I found a couple of things distracting that I didn't expect:

* The score sometimes was a little too Lost like, unsurprising since both have the same composers. I can't remember specific scenes, but there were a couple of moments that sounded very familiar.

* Some sound effects sounded like Star Wars, especially phaser fire and engine sounds. The latter reminded me of the pod-racer engine sounds. I kept thinking of a pod-racing N64 game I used to play a lot...

Anyone feel the same way, or notice something else similar?

I actually didn't think of Spock as Sylar much at all, which I thought I might.

I had a similar experience concerning LOST music. I fet a couple times it sounded like that scene in LOST they do where they walk down the beach on a long walk somewhere, and its a long shot of them walking with just the music.

I got a slight SW vibe with the "phaser" fight.

When the music kicks up after Pike dares Kirk to do better, it sounds very Lost-ish.

I did think the phaser fight was a tad "Star Wars"ish. I would have preferred if they kept the more traditional solid beam phasers from the other series. The whole "flipping" thing from stun to kill was pretty cool though

Oh, is that what the flipping did? I couldn't figure that out

no way, the phasers were cool -prevous phaser fights have always been lame. The inaccuracy was dreadful(specially considering its not hard to aim a solid beam), and the use of the weapon was appalling.

For the first time i actually think there was a sense that a phaser battle was a bad place to be.

Yep, red for kill, blue for stun. I actually thought it was one of the cooler subtle touches in the film

It reminded me of Nemesis to be honest :borg:

It was the distractions from other media... IE product placement that annoyed me slightly. It was hardly out of control, but the huge word NOKIA on the interface and classic BUD reference while they were listing off alien booze. Did I miss any?

AppleDisneyILM-Intergalatic I did not see, but imagined as the bridge designers. Oh the mergers in the new timeline!

/They obviously failed to kill off all the lawyers in this new timeline. Tragic really.

the Nokia one annoyed me, i could understand beer brands remaining in the future, heh

I thought "NOKIA" was quite, considering that we claim that we c\invented the concept of mobiles :P

Budweiser was also funny, why wouldn't an earth bar serve earth beer?

Seriously though those are in the first minuets of the 2 hour film, its no biggy.

^ I will say Slusho was fine by me. Mmmmm, Slusho.

If it paid for the subtle refinements to the Starfleet logos that were all over the place, and some extra detail, I can live with them. Had there been an Apple logo on the floor of the bridge, I would have thrown popcorn @ the screen! ;p

Uhura asks for a shot of Jack.

It's not the first time a music composer uses similar themes in two different scores:

- Basil Poledouris did that with Conan and RoboCop.

- James Horner as will with TWOK and Aliens.

* Some sound effects sounded like Star Wars, especially phaser fire and engine sounds. The latter reminded me of the pod-racer engine sounds. I kept thinking of a pod-racing N64 game I used to play a lot...

Which is also not surprising Ben Burtt (the man behind the sounds of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies) was the sound designer. It was actually very much looking forward tio hearing the sound effects for this movie. I especially loved the new engine sounds like the new warp effect and the jellyfish!

As for the score, I liked it and it worked well within the movie, but it's nothing compared to Goldsmith's or Horner's work.

The Nokia sound was good for a cheap laugh, so I didn't mind.

The one sound effect I could do without were the phasers. I had a slight headache going into the theater, and those sounds made it worse. :D
