Discworld

I love it. Love it love it love it love it love it. Love the writing, the characters, the humor, the plots, the parodies - the world Pratchett has created.

Love it.

Although I grew tired of the series after the first 16 or so books, i found it had enough to hold me for a little while. :)

^ Yeah, I kind of do. How clever of you to notice!

Some books more than others, of course.

I have limited exposure in the form of the telemovies and the comic book of the first two books, but it's mildly enjoyable. I'm sure it works better in the novel form.

Huge fan of the Death/Susan & City Watch Books.
Not such a big fan of the Rincewind or Witches ones though.

The Death books are hilarious. I've read only a little of the City Watch books but the sheer incompetence of the City Watch makes for some funny reading.

The Watch start to get surprisingly efficient as the series progresses, which is probably why Pratchett has stopped writing about them. Still, the best of the bunch is IMO 'Nightwatch', surprisingly the least "funny", unless you count dark humour.

Until Fifth Elephant there are good books (Guards, Guards, Hogfather, Interesting Times), there are some superfunny books (Colour of Magic, Small Gods, Jingo), there are some confusing ones (most of the witches)... But after Fifth Elephant, EVERY BOOK IS PERFECT IN EVERY POSSIBLE WAY :)
I loved them all to bits and I'm waiting for Unseen Academicals like it could save the world...

Dramatically.

Hogfather the movie was pretty good, though a pale shadow of the book, but I didn't like The Colour of Magic much at all. :/

That said, the books are awesome, for the most part. There's a few stinkers (mostly early on and then later in the series), but the middle books are great! :D

I've read the first 4 books and Hogfather, I enjoy them but wouldn't say I loved them, but I do plan on reading more.

Another fan of the Discworld books here. For the most part i only really follow the City Watch books, although ive found the Moist Von Lipwig books very entertaining as well.

It also helps that Terry Pratchett is a thoroughly nice guy, i met him a few years ago at a book signing in Liverpool, and he had time for everyone, listening to our various inane stories.

I agree with this. The Truth, Thief of Time, Monstrous Regiment, Night Watch, Thud!, Going Postal and Making Money are superb.

The only books I've not enjoyed that much are the first two and Small Gods. I still have about 6 to read though. Didn't like the Tiffany Aching books that much either.

Im reading Nightwatch now :)

Has anybody else noticed that their main watch house, if you break it down and say it out loud is Sue-The-Police?

I think 'Nightwatch' is probably the best (non-children's book) Discworld candidate for a theatrical adaption. It's nicely self contained, has a mature tone, most of the characters are introduced within the narrative, it has a clear villain and a definite beginning-middle-end structure. Few of the other books are so balanced.

You mean Pseudopolis Yard?...hmm, "Pseu-do-pol-is"...I suppose I can see that. Pratchett isn't above the odd spelling pun. Of course the word Pseudopolis itself literally means something along the lines of "fake-city".

Some don't like the first couple of books-I'm still laughing about the luggage! samsonite should kick out a set of sentient pearwood trunks-I'd be all over that.

as far as i'm concerned, the only weak ones are the first two, Pyramids and to a lesser extent, Equal Rites. my sister hated Monstrous Regiment, but i loved it.

Soul Music and Moving Pictures are two of my favourites. Night Watch and Thud! are top 5 as well.
