Discovery's uniform insignia...combadge?

MarsWeeps

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Check out the uniform insignia pin for the new series. Could it be a combadge? Doubtful considering the time frame but it looks to be something more than just an insignia pin. Check out the two layers and notice the protruding pin in the bottom left corner. It almost looks like the top layer of the insignia slides open using the pin as a pivot point. Any ideas or thoughts on this design?

Wasn't the arrowhead exclusive to the Enterprise, with each ship having their own design?

Looks like that's being retconned.

So far, the uniform looks like an updated version the ones from Enterprise. Right now I'm wondering if they're all blue or if they'll come in different colors.

I think most of those badges are Fan designs, we only ever saw 5 of those in the series.

Each ship having its own badge was actually an error, according to an internal memo all ships were meant to use the enterprise badge, but something happened in in the chain of communications and that never happened

Thanks for the replies but they don't address my question about the possibility of the uniform insignia being a "device" of some type. I hope they don't retcon it into a combadge.

If JJ didn't do it, I doubt discovery will

I would have said that they were just metal pins but after what you pointed out, who knows.

I think it's a pin meant to help keep the badge centered on the wearer's chest. It definitely looks to be made of metal.

I don't think it's a pivot point, I think it's a rank pip and we're gonna have cluttered looking badges for the higher ranks.

I think it should flip open revealing an analogue clock so everybody can tell the time whilst wandering the halls without having to pester the poor computer. Or a protein pill container for when you're peckish, but your tour at the conn doesn't finish for another 90 minutes. Or, to just fuck with people who give a shit about minutiae like this.

So everybody else gets fabric insignias? -1

Unless it's on some sort of field jacket then.. meh.

The Delta is split so in my view they can get away with it being a different insignia, thus preserving glorious cannon.

Who says anyone else gets fabric insignias?

The Enterprise crew sure has fabric insignias in "Teh Cage" and "WNMHGB"WIARLA.

No voice access to the computer in The Cage.

Just because it wasn't used doesn't mean it didn't exist.

And this is me nitpicking that little metal stud:
'Muh greeblies!

Yeah, can't really expect them to film a new series using 1960's standards. Technological canon is going to be violated, there's really no way around it. I say enjoy the show for what it is. It's 50 years since Trek came out, some changes are to be expected.

Because, yah know, nobody ever made a movie about history. That would just be ridiculous. People riding around one horses with no cell phones? Who would watch that crap?
