Discovery's registry number

I think the number and the ship's design (albeit perhaps with details a bit modernized for contemporary audiences, which might cause some confusion) is intended to show exactly when the series is taking place.

I don't see why Fuller and company would need to release a misleading teaser. They've already disclosed that it's going to be set in the prime universe, which is all you need to get most of the diehards back on board (at least temporarily, lol). The idea of a teaser is to sell you on the show, not pull a bait-and-switch on the entire premise.

Yep.

I thought there was a rumor the new show was set after Star Trek VI? The font theory that Technomage talks about is an interesting guess too.

My own suspicion is that Discovery was one of the last ships built before the test flight of the U.S.S. Constitution.

The USS Constellation is NCC-1017. It is a Constitution class ship. Its an oddity that shows the ship may not be as old as folks think based solely on the NCC number

I stand corrected, Mirror Mirror.
Sorry for the bold, I did not notice it was all in bold. The real life reason was the Constellation was built with a off the shelf Enterprise model. The only had the number 1,7, 0,1 so had to get creative. Still this set the case pretty early that the NCC numbers were not always in order

One could also make the case that Constitution-class ships have been around for a long time before TOS started, and therefore the earliest builds could have been numbered in the NCC-1000s.

We know this is not the case. We know the USS constitution, the lead of the class is NCC-1700. A lot has been published about the class. Its simply that the NCC numbers often make little sense.

My theory is the Constellation was a different class of ship, but similar in appearance to the Constitution class.

Officially, it is a constitution class. The numbers simply make no sense. The numbers we know of officially are NCC-1700,NCC-1017, NCC-1701, NCC-1764, NCC-1664,NCC-1703,NCC-1631,NCC-1709 and NCC-1657. TOS says there are only 12 of the class in the fleet. Showing even from Day 1, they just made up numbers, if Starfleet has a system, no sane person has ever understood it.

Not sure how "official" the names and numbers are. It's partially guess work by various fan and pros.

The Constellation is referred to as a "starship" on-screen. Take that for what you will. I've always thought there is more than one class of starship, including Constitution-class. I'm perfectly OK with the Constellation being retrofitted to Constitution-class, or something similar, from some older class.

It depends. Most are in the remasters two are in a book, that later got made canon in the remasters. There is a much longer list that is not confirmed, those are the ones confirmed as canon.

They called them Starship classes in the 1st and second season IIRC

Yeah, the name did not get changed to later. I do not recall just when, but that was what they called the Constitution class at first. It basically got retconned.
TNG and DS9 called the NCC-1701 Constitution-class.

See, for example, "The Naked Now" and "Trials and Tribble-ations." Also, "Relics."

Yeah, it got retconned. I think they may have even happened in the last season of the TOS or maybe in the books.

Edit: Ah it comes from the script of "Space seed" it did not show up on the screen, but that was where the name of the class first showed up. Although it seems it would wait to the Movies before it became canon

How did the remasters canonize it? Books of course aren't really canon. I think the intro to the encyclopedia says as much.
