I don't understand how Disco ships are vastly bigger but have far less crew. There must be like 12 people on each deck.

It's a ghost ship compared to the Kelvin, similarly upscaled from TOS but with a crew of 800+

The ships have more realistic room for the equipment that would go between decks, and Jefferies Tubes.
The corridors are wider.
The rooms are larger.
More storage rooms.
Deck heights now fit the exterior unlike with original sizes.

If you had narrower corridors (the 8' TOS ones were considered absurdly wide back in the day) and less cavernous rooms you would free up a lot of empty space and wouldn't need such massive ships either.

The upscaling of DSC ships can be called many things, but "more realistic" isn't one I would pick

We can already see the size of Discovery's sets. We can assume most of those will double up for Enterprise ones.

But there are issues with some ships being underscaled, and fitting some of the sets into the ship layouts.

I am not experienced enough to specify what scales are right and wrong. But if John Eaves and Doug Drexler have felt the need to scale up the TOS ship by a similar amount, we know its not purely a creative choice for Discovery.

Oh those JJ Scales are way OTT though, but then again, look at what they decided should be an Engineering design...

If you're talking just about what we've got then yes, the Discoverse ships do match pretty well with their sets.

Historically, the smaller corridors and rooms matched the smaller ships as well, although with TOS you needed to ignore the 10' high walls that were simply a result of 1960s production techniques. A lot of the more detailed Phase2 cutaways were done with the existing sets in mind and fit nicely

People seem to forget that Jeffery's tubes Are Not between decks.. They are branched off acutall decks, there like the attics of a starship. Take the curve of a saucer, you have so much room to make a 3 Meter deck, but you have alot of area that isn't in habitable, thats where all the machinery is, life support, conduits, etc. and the jeffery's tubes are small crawlways that run where you can't stand up. Those places seen where you can stand up are junctions that are in the "Stand up" zone. You may have gravity plating, or some piping going on between decks, but to me its like maybe 6 inches that seperate the decks from each other.

For me, look at the Refit enterprise corridors, there relativly small, and fit nicely in the 305m refit.

Well, we know for a fact that there's no room for Jeffries tubes between the decks of the DSC hero ship: the shuttlebay set (that is, set plus the computer matte expansion) mercilessly shows the structures between decks to be mere inches tall.

We also can easily see that every horizontal Jeffries tube entrance in TNG and DS9 was at waist level, establishing where horizontal tubes are (but not necessarily telling there aren't more between the decks on those ships).

Kirk's ship never gave us evidence of the above two sorts, so we can't easily tell how this thing works there. "In a Mirror, Darkly" shows standing height access tubes aboard the Defiant, though, with no hint of crawlways other than the acutely angled ones familiar from TOS.

With VOY, we are dealing with suspiciously high decks, though, higher than the evident interiors of the sets. That is, we can count window rows just as easily as in the DSC shuttlebay scenes, and we can observe interiors, and we can then decide there's room for Jeffries tubes in between the decks.

So different ships may have different setups, and no a priori assumptions are going to help us figure out dimensions.

That's right! A very long straight one. I wonder what sort of machinery is on either side of the long, junctionless tunnel? Perhaps that entire section of Deck 9 is given over to machinery?

Thought of that. Deck 9 only goes so far, so above 10 forward there may be a crawlspace/tube above it, close to the bar area, as shown. Plus.. make allowances to, its a tv show, Plot trumps engineering diagrams! In real, it would be a slightly curved tube around the perimeter of deck 9. There not going to build a new set.. "Close enough"

And going abit further.. in St 5.. when Scotty was shown walking upright in a "Jeffery's Tube" It may have been a part of a deck, that was given over to piping, etc. Not every part of a deck is given over to living space, eps grids, power conduits, hell A/C vents need to be accessed and repaired on a regular basis. Even the "Hilton" has engineering spaces with repair shops, etc. Toilet clogged on deck 5? welp.. someone has to get the plunger

Discovery scale Galaxy class is over a kilometre long, so there is plenty of space for Jefferies tubes!

Galaxy class ships are the exact same size as refit-Connies. Haven't you seen them both go through the same spacedock doors?

Michael drops from one into the shuttlebay, I don't think you can get more "between decks" than that.

There's also this cutaway of the Shenzhou seen in the turbolift, but the ship was upscaled since this was made. This has 10 decks, the final version has 13 or 15.

A good deal of Crossfield's space may be set aside for lab space. Hell maybe the design was initially meant to be a clipper style fast-freighter.

There may not be roof for a full height deck above the Discovery shuttle bay. It's quite tall, after all...
