Discovery has been delayed until May 2017

They have to start to work early .... how many months have they lost since they announced the new series??

Meanwhile....

CBS Exec: "Waitaminute. We announced *what* now?!"
Fuller: "We told 'em we were making another Trek series. Started out as a joke, and got out of control. 10 years before TOS? A paid service like Netflix, but you still have to watch advertising? Who'd believe *that*?? Well, it turns out, an awfully lot of Trek fans, many of whom have Klingon weapons and our addresses. So we'd better do *something*, and quick!"
Exec: "Well, we've got those Axanar guys by the short ones, let's just make some minor changes and do a series with that, then...."

;)

They actually thought we were making a show with the ship in that fake promo we made.

The Deadpool of ST.

But I can't help thinking that CBS really botched this. They own the property, they knew 2016 was the 50th anniversary. They really should have prepared for that well in advance and launched this new show this year (preferably on September 8th).
I sorta got the impression that nobody really knew. They should have pushed back the release date of Beyond closer to the 50th anniversary's date and advertise it as a celebration of it. Then when the movie runs and the hype starts to die down they should've shown some more-completed Star Trek: Discovery footage and start to advertise the release along with pitching CBS All-Access.

I don't know if anybody asked this already. Am I understanding the article correctly that the show will be available on Netflix, but NOT in the US?

Just imagine if we were in 2005 and you were told that you had to wait till 2017 for the next ST series! The horror, the horror (Apocalypse Now)
You know, if someone had told me in 2005 that there would be a new Trek movie as soon as 2009, I'd have laughed in their face and said "not that quickly." As it is, a year later in 2006 when word first broke of Abrams doing a Trek movie I thought for sure it had to be a hoax. Some hoax.

There was an idiot online at the time insisting that the announcement of ST 2009 was a transparent publicity stunt for Mission Impossible and that it would never be made.

Really disappointed to hear this, but I guess I'd rather they take their time and get it right than to rush it to airing before it's ready. The creators are smart, talented people. So, I'll just trust they know what they're doing.
Yeah. I did think they were getting off to a VERY slow start considering the deadline, so this was probably inevitable. I guess pre-preproduction (getting staff, offices, internal budgeting) ate into their time. They are having to build this thing from the ground up, after all.
Plus, as Wayoung pointed out, Fuller is also overseeing the launch of American Gods. Kurtzman is overseeing preproduction of The Mummy (and possibly has other duties with Bad Robot).
I'm surprised the casting list hasn't already leaked.
I think production leaks happen when staff are not completely invested, i.e. they're thinking more of impressing (or appalling) the public than supporting the production. So I take a lack of leaks as indicating high internal morale, if nothing else.
Had your baby girl and Discovery arrived on the same day you could always have named her after the new Number One
Why not just call her Discovery? It's a better girl's name than Enterprise, anyway.
Kurtzman and Fuller said in a statement. “We aim to dream big and deliver, and that means making sure the demands of physical and post-production for a show that takes place entirely in space...”

Ooh! Did anyone notice this? Looks like this is definitely a ship show.

Bloodline has just been cancelled, so Kyle Chandler is now available.

Casting him would make the delay more than worthwhile in my eyes.

Wow, yes, on the one hand, that would've been shocking to hear back then. But, on the other hand, given the downward trends for Trek TV series and movies, and the way it all ended, it would've also been nice to know back then that, yes, Trek will return as a series one day! It didn't seem like it would.
