Discovery at STLV. The massive info dump

Eaves was the wrong person to design the Walker Class. He has a very distinct style that apparently doesn't change with the era he is designing for. It looks like it belongs in the 24th century.

I actually like that, it gives it a bit of a continuity look to it. Has the same feel, just with an earlier not as refined look to it.

@TrekCore: BREAKING: @startrektour launching #StarTrek Film Academy for fans to learn how to take an episode from script to stage7

@TrekCore: @startrektour Fans will work with Okudas, Drexler, more; team reaching out to Frakes to *possibly* contribute in a directing capacityn

@TrekCore: @startrektour Fans will leave week-long session with their own filmed #StarTrek "vignette" shot on the @startrektour sets

@TrekCore: @startrektour Fans can be in front or behind the camera - or both - as part of the process.
If that was the big announcement, it was completely underwhelming.

Additionally, if someone wants to get into to television, that's not the way.

Riveting news. This is for when they open the door to submissions again so people know how to structure their story pitch.
This announcement doesn't imply that at all. This is just a way for some people to make money. A bit sad actually because people with real skills and talent who want to get into television won't be doing it this way.

I know, when I wrote it we didn't have all the details yet. At first it did seem like a talent search but apparently is more like the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Camp from the SImpsons.

I was kind of expecting more to come out of ST:LV, but maybe they shot their whole load at Comic Con.

That would make sense. You want to attract the people that are on the fence with it, STLV is filled with people that you know are going to watch it (or should....)

Presumably we'll have another trailer at some point - to show off the Discovery itself, I wonder when that will be released.

At some point they need to do an actual TV commercial to advertise the premiere and the show being on CBS All Access and Netflix. I would imagine that might be when we get a much better look at the Discovery itself. I just hope that's soon. We're in August now. They have close to 2 months until the premiere.

You know, I just don't get it. Since it's first reveal the Shenzou has been getting boundless raves for its design.

I think it's ugly as sin.

Much prefer the DISCO, having grown on me, but even that's a bit blah.

Hugo -

I still think it would have been a good movie to show the first episode... or the first hour of the premiere two parter... at the convention to a small, exclusive crowd (maybe 100 random fans could be selected by their ticket numbers).

That is, as long as they felt the audience would respond favorably. If they felt that old school trekkies would hate it, it makes perfect sense to not show it.

But if it were something that would help allay the fears a lot of people have it would have been a good move to start garnering early buzz and excitement if a bunch of diehard Trekkies were tweeting about it.

Heck, if some footage leaked, and it were really good, it would very much help the premiere ratings.

Time and time again it's been proved that leaked stuff like that does more good than harm, at least in cases where the show or movie is top notch.

It was designed for the 24th century. Here's the original, made by Eaves for a Trek fan club:

When they decided to reboot the visuals, anything was fair game.

I agree. The Shenzhou is not necessarily ugly to me, but it's "meh" at best. I'm much more interested in seeing more of Discovery.

This has very little in common with the ship we see. It has a saucer, pointed nacelles( which are something he does all the time) and a vague kinda pylon structure on the saucer that almost kinda( because its square) looks like the squad section on the Walker. But they are not the same shape or style.

The form styles are just not the same at all.

Hypothetically, could the Mawson be representative of a 24th century refit of the 23C Walker class? Akin to the Constitution class - (Enterprise class) refit - Exeter class (STO), or is the visual relationship more like Constitution/Ambassador?

I appreciate your point but I really have to disagree. The Shenzou is a perfectly logical progression from the NX-01 and aesthetically positions it perfectly in this rebooted design era. Its a truly beautiful looking ship.

If we accept the NX-01 is a product of its time, and it is of course canon that it is, then the Shenzhou makes perfect sense. In fact, it supports the theory developed during ENT that the 'Akira-like' catamaran design lineage runs parallel to the 'secondary hull' lineage which led to the Constitution.
