Discovery at SDCC - Consolidated Thread

Just saw it on twitter and I'm still not sure about the weird gaps in the saucer, but the thicker neck support at least looks like it's stable.

What's weirder is the projection from the navigational deflector. Looks like a recessed conical dish with an articulated antenna protruding from the center.

And...forward impulse engines too?

*looks closer at the saucer* and can the central disc rotate? the arms holding it look like they have tracks and groves for movement.

All right, so that banner image is a blow-up from a piece of one of the promotional posters reproduced in the body of the article, rotated and enlarged. It's still art being created by the PR department rather than a frame of the ship as it actually appears in the show.

The rendering of Shenzhou that's visible in several shots of the existing trailer is a more detailed mesh and more plausibly rendered than anything we've seen of Discovery herself so far.

Rainn Wilson moderates and 1000 fans will get that fantastic poster. 5 producers will be on stage.

I like the style of the poster but the font is an abomination. :D

The ship looks okay now. I suppose the middle part has to look all aerodynamic to make sure all that air in space doesn't... wait... oh well, it looks fine. ;)

Very cool. Much better than the early digital render we got!

Sweet poster, too...

Nice to see some new promotion material!
I LOVE the poster design - specifically the choice of colours, the composition, and the style. Looks very retro-y.

What I'm not the biggest fan of is the new design of the Discovery. Some comments I already made in the "Discovery"-design-thread: They fixed some issues of the previous design. They made others worse.

  • I much more prefer the nacelles from the short teaser animation. The ones that look forward. The backward facing ones of this picture looks unbalanced. They tried to fix something that wasn't broken...
  • The boxy 'underbelly' is still the weak spot of the design. They improved it since the original teaser last year. But it still looks unfinished.
  • I dig the new details on the neck and the dish!
  • But I don't like that they shortened the height. All recent new Trek ships were way too flat (Defiant, VOY, NX-01, Ent-E,...) I was super happy to see some ships with height again (JJprise, teaser-DIS). But I can live with it.
  • I LOVE the glowing light on the underside of the saucer. Also, the outer edges of the saucer have notably improved. Before it was just the Ent-A saucer edge. Now it is it's own, unique thing.
  • Not a big fan of the cut-outs. They were wrong in the original trailer, and they only made it worse. It's not a deal breaker or anything. But I don't like it.

All in all, the view from below was the big weak spot of the Discovery design. All other angles already worked pretty well. The notably improved it as a whole. But she's still far from perfect, and I would like further improvements to be done. Sadly, I imagine that might already be the final design, simply by virtue of the release date approacching fast...

I"m just going to try and look past the design choices here and look forward to seeing Trek on the air again after 12 years.

I'm really not sure what to make of Discovery's design. It's a lot less offensive than the early version we saw last year, but it's still not exactly inspired.

It's alright. It's no longer as ugly as the teaser version. It's still not what I'd call graceful, beautiful, or impressive, but it's ok. I won't be put off or distracted by the ship design, so that's an improvement. I'd like to see the on screen version now though, the cartoony art campaign is neat and all, but I want me some footage.
