Discovery at SDCC - Consolidated Thread

It admittedly took a while, but I've warmed up to the Discovery design. It breaks for its OWN style of retro-sci-fi instead of aping the TOS aesthetic, which is a great choice.

I think this is the first real look we've gotten at the underside of the ship, in its near-final or complete form? I like the added details to the nacelle caps and main deflector, plus whatever those glowey stripes are flanking the latter. I was really worried about meshing such a boxy secondary hull to a round saucer, but this is better than the previous animation for sure. The final test of course will be to see her in motion.

I'd love to have, but don't expect to ever get, a good, in-show excuse for the cut-outs ... but damned if I don't like the ship anyway. There's a little bit of Constitution-class in her, a little bit of Daedalus, a little bit of McQuarrie, and a whole lot of awesome sauce to grease her all up!

...

Okay, forget I said that last bit.

As I was looking at the ship in this artwork, I was thinking the same things! The Daedalus is there in the very center of the saucer, the TOS numbering style of having the NCC number running out to the edge of the saucer, quite a lot of elements from Trek's prior ship designs, distilled into a new ship (which I always liked the looks of, anyway!)

I really, really dig this! Love the long nacelles, both the saucersection and the secondary hull. I feel it looks like a contemporary of the Kirk's Enterprise, but still different and new enough.

looks like this was the Starfleet 'starship class' design just prior to the Constitution type 'starship' class design. I does look like and in between step between the ENT and TOS eras - even though it's based on the passed over design for the aborted Star Trek: Phase II TV series, whose concepts were re-worked to make Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

I like the look of it better in that poster and the other more recent art than I did in the previous WIP art and renders.

If this is indeed the final form of Discovery, gotta say that I like it, cutouts and all! :techman:

Looking forward to news coming out of SDCC this weekend.

I like the style of the poster but the font is an abomination. :D

The ship looks okay now. I suppose the middle part has to look all aerodynamic to make sure all that air in space doesn't... wait... oh well, it looks fine. ;)

The conflicting perspective on the bevel is driving me nuts. The angles are so jarring.

But the colors, my God the colors look great! The ship is a beauty in that shot, and I only expect it to look even better in-series.

Is it just me that's getting the sense that whatever class starship Discovery is, it's meant to be substantially larger than Kirk's Enterprise was? The inner section of the saucer looks at least three decks thick, while the viewports and deflector dish both look relatively smaller compared to the ship.

So far I'm really liking what I see. I think I'll know more how I feel about it once I see it in action.

The design has really grown on me this last year or I'm finally getting excited this is really going to happen. September 24 can't get here soon enough.

No, that design was from the unmade movie "Star Trek Planet of the Titans" the design was never considered for Star Trek II (What we call Phase II now) as Gene was able to get Matt Jefferies to come back and by then Ralph McQuarrie (who was fleshing out Ken Adam's sketches) had moved on to BSG and was starting pre-production work on Empire Strikes Back.

This is the Phase II Enterprise that was re-worked to become the TMP refit:

Ya,also need to recall the Enterprise is a decafe old at this point. Who knows how old the class was. This ship might be brand new

I like it, but I liked the boxy retro look, so I dunno whether I like this better - the MacQuarrie inspired design looked pleasingly retro yet believably detailed - so I hope they don't go down the route of making designs look too jaggy and 2010s

Trekyards might have an embolism when they see the saucer gap lol.

I think this is turning out to be one of the coolest Starship designs ever... absolutely love the cut-outs..!!

The Adam/McQuarrie Enterprise concept has nothing to do with the cancelled Star Trek: Phase II TV series or the Star Trek: The Motion Picture film. It was designed for the planned but aborted Star Trek: Planet of the Titans feature film.
