Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

He's actually right about this.

Serialized shows need an overreaching hook if they want to be interesting.

nBSG had "will they survive", "who are the final five", and "what's going on with the 13th colony".

Lost had, what the hell is going on with the island.

STD doesn't have any of that, we know how the war will end, we know the spore drive will go nowhere, and those are the over reaching plot-lines they choose to go with for the series.

You have a point, Discovery doesn't have the same unknowables as BSG or Lost but I kinda look at as being akin to Titanic. Yes everyone knew the ship sank but it was the events going on board ship that drew everyone (except for me, I hated Titanic). People Liked the love story, Billy Zane's wig provided the mystery etc.. It was the journey of the characters that mattered. Sure we know the Klingon war will end either with a stalemate or federation victory, but we don't know what goes into that outcome, does someone make a great sacrifice, do we reach a common ground with the Klingons or do we beat them with force? Same with the spore drive, yes we know it will fail, but does it fail because using it could it rip apart the universe, Will stamets die because of it? There are a large number of unknowns within the known.

You don't have to like it. Doesn't make it "not Trek."

The problem with that sort of thing is that it rests on the laurels of us caring about the characters.

And they have done a pretty horrible job on that front.

I just watched episode 5, only 1 episode behind now. They are telling fewer jokes than in the earlier episodes. That means it is more like star trek than discovery is. How sad
What really is sad, is that ST can supposedly only be this ONE thing to you..

What an awful thread.
Yeah, unfortunately it is. We've been discussing the thread behind the scenes, and we don't really care for the fact that it's descended into a bunch of back and forth sniping between fans of either show, thinly veiled insults and trolling, non-constructive one word retorts, and hyperbolic rhetoric about how terrible either show supposedly is.

As such, we've decided to put the thread on a two-day lockdown, with the hopes that when it is reopened a more constructive dialogue can be had, although I have my doubts considering the nature of the posts so far and the subject matter of the thread itself. But we're going to give it a try instead of shutting it down completely.

By shutting this down, I don't mean you should just expand the same rhetoric and sniping to other DSC threads as has already been happening. People are going to have to start getting a grip and respecting the opinions of fans of either show instead of seeing them as rivals.

Reopening so people can discuss the new episode airing tonight. Sorry about the delay. Please try and remain civil and remember that they're just TV shows and you can like or dislike both without it having some deeper meaning. In fact, I'm going to remove the "versus" part of the title to make things hopefully slightly less cutthroat and competitive.

Or the Klingon achieve victory and the Federation is forced back, losing territory and "honor."

Majority of wars don't end in one side surrendering.
There was plenty of room on that door or table or whatever it was for Leo.
Room yes, buoyancy no.

Only one of them was getting out of the freezing water.

I applaud your optimism and your pumpkin but I will batten down the hatches nonetheless. :techman:

I am very happy to have Discovery AND the Orville.

Something nice about having a good one two punch with sci fi that's more heavy handed, and sci fi that's fairly light hearted.

I like heavier handed sci fi, like nuBSG ( though that was a bit over the top ) but sometimes it's not particularly, enjoyable in the classic sense. I like seeing the Discovery story unfold, but sometimes you watch the heavier handed stuff because you like to hate the villain, and you like to hate when the good guys lose, just for the extra feelings when the good guys eventually win.

Orville is simply more fun to watch, Kinda like Firefly,

let's just hope it lasts longer than Firefly.
