Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

He's actually right about this.

Serialized shows need an overreaching hook if they want to be interesting.

nBSG had "will they survive", "who are the final five", and "what's going on with the 13th colony".

Lost had, what the hell is going on with the island.

STD doesn't have any of that, we know how the war will end, we know the spore drive will go nowhere, and those are the over reaching plot-lines they choose to go with for the series.

He's right?
Do you mind if I make up my own mind what series I enjoy and not let Ed dictate for me what IS good and what isn't..?

Very good point. Many of these serial shows have a greater over arching mystery that DSC just doesn't have. We pretty much know how everything will end. The only possible mystery is "why do the Klingons look different?" But most people assume there is no mystery, they show runners just redid Klingons.

I still think there might be some plot twist like this is all the mirror universe of something - but right now it's not presented as a mystery. If that happens it will just be a plot twist. (not sure if that all made sense.)

We know how it ends? You can't just say that without telling us!

It's also why I don't watch films that take place during WW II, like Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan or Dunkirk, 'cause you know how it's going to end.. the Germans lose.

Well, it hooked me. Just because it isn't a "mystery" doesn't mean I don't want to see how it plays out. I

Well that scene in front of the mirror certainly evoked a lot of mystery.... really want to know what's going on there.. of course they'll defeat the Klingons, but it's about these characters, these people...

I look at it this way. If The Orville were actually a Trek show, without all the jokes, I probably wouldn't enjoy it that much. It's just be S1 Enterprise again. It works as a semi-humorous homage to Trek, and I like the comfy tone.

Discovery has some issues with its writing and editing, but I'm enjoying it as a Trek show going in a different direction and I'm intrigued by what they're planning to do.

I just watched episode 5, only 1 episode behind now. They are telling fewer jokes than in the earlier episodes. That means it is more like star trek than discovery is. How sad
