Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

So in weighing it out so far, I've watched The Orville on initial run, then went back and watched each episode several times after that because it is good fun and really enjoyable to watch. I can go and watch those in the same way I can watch any TOS episode at any time.

Discovery? I watched the first two on Sunday night, then watched them again yesterday. At this point, I feel like I'm fine with those and don't really need to revisit them until after I've seen each episode individually, and then rewatch the whole arc.

I'm thoroughly enjoying The Orville, but only just liking Discovery. It's actually underwhelming at this point. And as a lifelong Trek fan, that concerns me.

I just didn't care for The Orville pilot and haven't watched the next two episodes yet, and really don't intend on it. I also didn't care much for the DIS pilot, but since it's Star Trek, it'll get a few more chances that I'm not giving The Orville.

I thought the third episode of The Orville felt more like a Star Trek show than the first two episodes of Discovery.
Agreed. And that was the one reviewers felt was clumsily done! To me, it was quite the opposite. It actually had a very contemporary issue, put it with another race, and showed it back to us.

It told a story yet within their time and place. That is Star Trek.

Well, TNG's "issue shows" were a little (or a lot) clumsy a quarter of a century ago and doing them the same way today makes that a little more obvious.

Because yeah, the script for "About A Girl" was not a bad knock-off of what TNG did. It was what TNG did. :)

The Orville is better at this point. It knows what it wants to be and is doing a good job. It's not revolutionary (yet it's a breath of fresh air because it's different from modern dramas) and it's not perfect. It's just really fun to watch.

Discovery so far is just a mess and it seems like they made mistakes at every turn. Some really weird bad stuff like everything relating to the Klingons, the weird super darkness at the court thing at the end, besides all the regular bad stuff (bad writing, generic 2017 sci-fi look, etc.).

Agreed, been busy after watching Orville premiere watched 3rd espisode last night

Great episode, told contemporary story set on that universe. Funnt, yet still.git a goid message across. My 13 year old watched with me and was a great lesson for him to see n ge enjoyed

I like 2nd episode of Discovery, but has flaws - Klingon look, Starfleet UNIFORMS are horrible, wouldn't know it's Trek or generic scifi show by them. Seemed slow. Purchased a month of all access so they have long to keep me. Giving it every shot and want to Love it

Need to start getting somewhere with tge story arc quickly

They are only at their beginning but I think both shows are great. I hope they keep going for many years.

The problem I have with Discovery is that it may not be Star Trek anymore. If for you Star Trek is a universe with it's own worlds and alien species, then this could be Star Trek for you. You don't care if Star Trek is turned into a fun and dramatic action movie. It's fun, it's dramatic, there's a lot of actions and there's Klingons and a Federation. What's not to like? It's Star Trek.

For me Star Trek, was about a futuristic space ship crew facing various moral, ethical and personal dilemma. It's fun, dramatic and there's action, but they also face various moral, ethical and personal dilemma. Why? Because they are exploring new worlds and civilizations (aliens worlds, advanced technologies). So Star Trek is a cut above many other sci-fi tv shows/movies in that department. It's what make it (almost) unique. It has action, drama and also this scientific/intellectual aspect.

I'm not sure, if the Discovery format will allow the crew to face various moral and ethical dilemmas (personal dilemmas, yes). They are not exploring new worlds and civilizations. It's only a war with the Klingons. In that aspect, I see Star Trek Discovery as a possible dumbed-down version of Star Trek (to be a bit controversial with my choice of words). Star Trek without the intellectual aspect; just a spaceship facing various wars and military enemies. An action series set in space in the Star Trek universe. Of course, I don't have any particular attachment to the name Star Trek, they can turn it into an action series if they want. I just judge it for what it is. I like action movies with some personal dramas as any person. Not every TV series, should include moral, ethical dilemmas, new technologies and exploring new worlds and civilizations. It's just what defined and made Star Trek special for me. And it's unfortunate to possibly see that go, after all, we already have a lot of action tv series/movies with drama but not a lot of tv shows, with an intellectual/scientific edge, like Star Trek...

In Orville, we have a show which has a different tone than Star Trek series, but may actually be more Star Trek than the new Star Trek in the aspects mentioned above. But again, I don't think every show should be "like Star Trek", that's why I will probably enjoy Discovery in it's own right. I liked the first 2 episodes same with the 3 Orville episodes. Not because I like everything but because it happens to be good and fun to watch. I must admit, I kind of enjoying/anticipating Orville a bit more because, I want to see where they will be going in each episodes. In Destiny, I know there will be a war with the Klingons, various fighting and heroism, drama and actions. Apparently, we just won't be exploring strange new worlds and civilizations.

Except the humans lost. Which is a big step up in the drama and reality department from TNG.

Well, they lost in "The Outcast" as well, which is the TNG episode I thought "About A Girl" most closely resembled.

Discovery is a modern Trek show and feels like it....in a good way.

Right now, I feel the opposite. It feels like Trek in all the wrong ways. Stilted dialogue and over abundance being two big things. The Klingons are just dull.

I wonder if CBS would charge me half-price if I quit watching the Klingon parts?

And that was way more heartbreaking since the person being directly effected was able to express their desire.

Yep - it definitely did what the TNG Federation did to member planets - "Hey, we don't like the way your culture does things so, we're not going to allow you to do those things off world...We also suggest you conform or your membership might be at risk..."

There's room for both shows, obviously.

But at this point, Orville is just a better show.

There hasn't been anything like the Orville on TV for years, whereas STD feels and looks like Battlestar Galactica. Just with less interesting characters and worse acting.

That's because they're going for a TNG type of show and it has a 90s feel to it. Discovery is a modern Trek show and feels like it....in a good way.
It's funny, because I feel the opposite. The Orville has a TNG aesthetic, yet has the TOS vibe and feel.

DSC, for me, is a departure for Star Trek. It's now an arc-based season, where the story will be told over 15 episodes. That isn't a bad thing, but it just hasn't started the way I hoped.

While it may be modern it doesn't feel like Trek to me, which is a shame. Just because they say Starfleet and have a recognizable alien or two doesn't make it Trek.
