Discovery 8/10 info dump thread...

It would be an interesting idea. Having the Discovery be the ship sent to respond to the distress call, being an older ship it takes her a while to get there.

They arrive to aid the survivors of the massacre, including a teenage Kirk.

Doesn't that kind of flub the 10-years before Kirk's 5-year mission though? Kirk's about 35 when he's talking about the incident, which is a few years into the 5-year mission. The original incident happened 20 years earlier. Making Kirk 15 at the time, and about 10 years earlier than the time of Discovery.

They said discovery is ten years prior to TOS, Kirk was what, 32, when he took command? I doubt that Fuller meant ten years to the day before wnmhgb, but more in the "That was a decade ago" when something was 12 years ago sense. 32, go back 13 years, he's 19 - still a teenager.

I'd guess anything from 5 years to 20 at the start of TOS is fair game for speculation :) wouldn't be the first time the timeline was a fudged a bit either to make things fit.

To change the topic a bit (I haven't read the entire thread so this may have been addressed) Fuller mentioned that come the second season, we might start to see more familiar characters. Do you suppose he's referring to characters other than the TOS crew? I'm quite opposed to any more recasts of those characters particularly in a TV show - I've no interest in seeing another young Kirk, Spock etc. But I'm quite happy to see younger versions of other characters in Trek canon that would be around at this time. If Fuller is indeed referring to such characters, who do you suppose we could, or should, encounter?

I don't want to see any of the main TOS characters. I'm hoping for some deeper cuts - bring in the Admirals and the Commodore's that show up for one episode and disappear. Being in authority positions in the fleet it won't be as "small universe syndrome" ish to have Captain Matt Decker show up for an episode vs. Young McCoy.

Agreed. I don't want a third version of Kirk and Co. I just want new characters and new stories. New aliens. New ships. New civilizations. Strange New Worlds, etc.

Sadly, the next "info-dump" will be in October according to Fuller..so well after filming starts.

Quick note about the ads. I imagine that CBS will offer a "premium" ad-free service for a few bucks more a month.
I'll only subscribe if there is no premium tier. Either have a flat rate with no commercials or stream for free with commercials.

I was hoping they'd do something for September 8, like reveal the actors and a cast photo. Oh well, I imagine we'll get this with the October info dump.

But hey, not only are we getting info dumps, we also know when we're getting info dumps. A lot better than the cone of silence that existed around the Abrams movies prior to their release.

The commercial thing is not remotely a deal-breaker for me. I've watched STAR TREK with commercials for fifty years now and somehow survived. I get that this is some newfangled "streaming" thing that runs on a different business model, but I can't get worked up about a few commercials. It's not exactly a matter of principle.

It's a new STAR TREK show. Of course I'm going to watch . . .even with commercials.

I'm sure more info will come out as they start casting. The casting lists for these shows tend to leak....

I'm still hoping for Fuller at the Toronto fan expo in a few weeks since the shows being made there :)

No matter what happens, at the end of the day, everything must reset so that TOS happens as we see it. That imposes some limitations.
TOS only followed one ship. Did every notable or dramatic event of that period involve Enterprise? Unlikely.

I loath commercials with every fiber of my being. lol

I haven't watched one (unless I wanted to) since the invention of the DVR so would absolutely prefer a commercial free option.
