I wouldn't be surprised at all if they just went ahead and made Burnham the captain of the ship.
That's exactly what's going to happen, and ugh.

Agreed. It's why there should be a writers' bible for the show. Ron D Moore supposedly had one for BSG (at least for the earlier seasons - S3 onwards got silly and he clearly took his eye off the ball). This is probably due to the initial show-runner/production difficulties but IMO DISC's main problem is that they can "do" a character-driven episode, a plot-arc, or other things, but not all together as they don't have an over-arching narrative with a series of rules within which to anchor it all (which others have said already on here). If I were Saru, I'd demand a transfer at that point. Even if he's buried the hatchet with Burnham, it would be galling to have Starfleet reinstate your disgraced former XO and make them the commanding officer of a ship that should be given to you.
Not canon.Admiral Kirk commanded the Enterprise-A for 6 years.
yeah we've gone rather off topic! Anyone think of an actor who is good but not (yet) A-list and would probably sign on for a multi-season stint?so....actors....

Much easier to just make Saru the captain, with Burnham as his XO.
My guess is they'll bring in a new security person - a transfer from Farragut - played by Liam Hemsworth or Robbie Amell.
And the new captain will be either Sarah Shahi or Cote de Pablo.
You know, once Lorca is gone, it would be pretty cool to bring in Jayne Brook's Admiral Cornwell to captain the ship in season two. Her character was well-received and they would fulfill the promise of a female captain after all.
But seeing as to the turns the show has taken these last couple of episodes, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they just went ahead and made Burnham the captain of the ship.
