Disappointed it's not Damon?

^^Karl Urban is a fairly big name these days,...

Karl Urban is movie cancer. He is almost painful to watch and his one acting "trick" was used up in LOTR. I have seen everything he has done since and winced. Just rent his Bourne Movie, Riddick, and Pathfinder and try to make it through his scenes...i dare you. He most certainly does not have the chops to to pull off an expressive character like McCoy (or what should be an expressive character).

I am a bit disappointed that Damon is not going to play Kirk. He is a proven talent and I can easily see him in the center seat. Chris Pine may work out well; I've never seen him in action except on a short YouTube video, where he did fine.

Nope, not all all. Whilst a massive fan of Damon, I couldnt picture him in a Star Trek film.

Im very happy with the current cast and im guessing im in the minority of people who is thanking the heavens that William Shatner will have no part whatsoever in its production.

Cameo and stunt casting with Nimoy and say Majel Barret would be fine, plus sprinkle in a few walkthroughs by TNG, DS9, and VOY cast wouldn't hurt to bring a familiar face for all.

I hope they (other casts) don't get to touch the movie with a 10 foot pole! What this movie doesn't need are more in-jokes.

to quote someone upthread:

HELL. NO.

EDIT: and sorry but Damon does NOT look as old as Shatner did when he first played Kirk back in the 60s. Have you looked at Damon lately? He's beginning to look a little older than he did a few years ago. no offense intended. we're ALL gettin' old. but we're talking about casting here.

I'd rather see the right actors cast than the most famous actors.

That's a false contradiction and therefore fallacious logic.

Only if you take my statement more literally than it was intended...

I just read the words on the screen; it's the writer's responsibility to successfully communicate intent.

Confirmed by whom? There are more disreputable sources out there than reputable ones. TrekMovie.com, which is one of the more reliable, cautious sources out there, is still listing "Federation Captain" and Pike as two different roles on its cast page.

in my recent interview with Orci he confirmed that the 'federation captain' was not Pike and he talked about how they want to introduce people to starfleet and show how Kirk isn't the only cool captain in it

^^Karl Urban is a fairly big name these days, and Simon Pegg is quite a big name in the UK.

I'll take your word for Karl Urban being a big name, personally I've never heard of 'im. And yes, Pegg is a fairly big name over here - but it's the US market that counts (in the cinemas anyway, DVD is getting to be a different story).

Why would Damon have made a good Kirk? Well I'll leave that for someone else to answer. He's a big star though, isn't he, riding high on his 'Bourne' films.

I won't take his word for it, because if he were a 'big name' many more of my friends and acquaintences would know who he is. Karl Urban may be a good actor, but no way is he a 'big name'

Some people seem to think that (yes I'm gonna pull out the dreaded phrase) stunt casting is the only way to ensure an audience for this film, and thus Trek's future viability. I say the most important thing is to tell a compelling story.

Good point, but I think you need both if you want big returns. 'Damon as Kirk' has the curiosity factor that will bring in the casuals. I'm not convinced why unknown actors will necessarily be better. I thought the general consensus (I know we have our individual opinions) was that Damon is a fine actor.
