You can do strange new worlds and still have season long arcs. We have seen some shows take the legal show formula, but instead of the Case of the Week, it is the same case all season. With 8-10 episodes they could have the classic mission statement 'to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations"...but develop it into a long form narrative over the season. Or 2 or 3 multi-episode arcs that make up a season. Maybe 3 four part stories for 12 episodes.

They should just have the Pike show called Star Trek: The Cage... where the final scene of the series reveals a wheelchair-bound Pike in a Talosian cage. The entire series an illusion.

Agreed. Season-long arcs isn't a strength of current Trek.

I'd rather have a DS9 approach or a season 4 of Enterprise approach. Stand alone episodes, double and three parters and maybe an overarching plot that isn't the basis for every episode.

If it was Strange New Worlds it could be an anthology series, much like the Star Trek books by the same name featuring short stories from fans and amateur writers. Still could be even being singular. Or maybe a re-brand of Short Treks.

It could also be for the Defenders style crossover that is being talked about recently. A concept bringing the four series (Disco, Picard, Section 31, Pike) would be a Strange New World.

It'll be interesting to see what it turns out being.

In the 70's they had the NBC Mystery Movie which included a rotation of shows. Columbo, McCloud and Macmillan and Wife each getting 7-8 episodes. They achieved a full season by alternating between them. These were not season long arcs, so there was no concern about breaking up any momentum in advancing the season long plot.

Columbo "Murder by the Book" September 15, 1971
McCloud "Encounter with Aries" September 22, 1971
McMillan and Wife "Murder by the Barrel" September 29, 1971
Columbo "Death Lends a Hand" October 6, 1971
McMillan and Wife "The Easy Sunday Murder Case" October 20, 1971
Columbo "Dead Weight" October 27, 1971
McCloud "Top of the World, Ma?" November 3, 1971
McMillan and Wife "Husbands, Wives, and Killers" November 10, 1971
Columbo "Suitable for Framing" November 17, 1971
McCloud "Somebody's Out to Get Jennie" November 24, 1971
McMillan and Wife "Death Is a Seven Point Favorite" December 8, 1971
Columbo "Lady in Waiting" December 15, 1971
McCloud "The Disposal Man" December 29, 1971
McMillan and Wife "The Face of Murder" January 5, 1972
McCloud "A Little Plot at Tranquil Valley" January 12, 1972
Columbo "Short Fuse" January 19, 1972
McCloud "The Fifth Man in a String Quartet" February 2, 1972
Columbo "Blueprint for Murder" February 9, 1972
McMillan and Wife "'Til Death Do Us Part" February 16, 1972
McCloud "Give My Regrets to Broadway" February 23, 1972
McMillan and Wife "An Elementary Case of Murder" March 1, 1972

Obviously, alot of variations on this are possible. A 12 episode season, 4 episodes for each of 3 shows. It doesnt have to rotate each week. You could have 4-4-4. This may have no connection to Strange New Worlds or anything else planned, but you there are ways to have multiple shows with or without arcs.

Not gonna happen, but I'd love a continuation of some form of ENTerprise with Archer, TPol, Trip*, Shran! Phlox, Soval.
Themes: the Earth Romulan war, and plenty of mythology filling 2-3 parters as in Season 4.

Would however also like a Pike (Anson Mount) & Una Enterprise show.
    Either way I win ;)

Considering that series ended prematurely, some kind of continuation (including undoing of Trip's death) is a good idea especially if they can get Manny Coto back as showrunner. But they can't simply do a 5th season. It's been 15 years and the actors have aged. They have to do something that takes place years later, similar to Picard.

Last I saw of Coto he was abusing Linda Park on Facebook, so I'm not sure they'd be up for a reunion.

The best continuation of ENT that we're ever going to get is the first two seasons of DSC.

Greener pastures, working on something great.
    I wouldn’t say that with 100% certainty.

Have a two-hour premiere/movie that starts with the Romulan attack on Starbase One. Flash forwards to the middle of the Earth-Romulan War, where everyone on NX-01 (or not on the NX-01 if Mayweather is on the Horizon at this time and Trip is on Romulus) has aged due to stress of the conflict and the Romulan attack on Earth. End with negotiations after the Battle of Charon and a flash forwards to Archer giving his speech at the Federation founding. And just ignore TATV.

Then the rest of S5 (and S6 and S7 if they want to complete ENT’s original planned run) can take place afterward in the 2160s – early 2200s. I don’t know if we need Manny Coto for this either.

    That may be true.

More importantly, most of the same names also work on Star Trek - Discovery (Green Harvest) and Star Trek - Section 31 (Windcleaver).

My two cents has always been that both largely self-contained, episodic shows and serialized shows where each season is a largely self-contained story are inferior methods of storytelling. In both cases the length of the arc is being dictated by broadcast needs (1 episode or 1 season) not based upon how much "story" there really is to tell.

The ideal situation - particularly now that lots of shows only have notational "seasons" that come out whenever stuff is ready - is to just tell the story in the amount of episodes needed, then end and tell another story. Wash rinse repeat. This could mean, for example, within 15 episodes you could get:
    • Four-episode miniseries
    • Two standlaones (say one prequel, and one MU episode)
    • Seven-episode serialized arc
    • One feature-length story
All of these don't need to come out at once, even if shot in one chunk. There could be breaks of a month or so between them, meaning the second "season" blends seamlessly into the first.

    "ENT21" wrapped development on Wednesday.

I speculate I am wrong about it being a different crew each season, and now instead I think it could be a different crew every handful of episodes.

    That seems very unlikely.

Star Trek - Pike or whatever it is called will be a show with Pike, Spock and Number One for multiple seasons. Even Kurtzman has hinted at that, early this year.
