Different Favorite Character(s) than Original Versions?

Frontier

Vice Admiral
Admiral
It occurred to me the other day when watching XI that the characters I consider my favorites from TOS aren't my favorites in this new incarnation. Which I find funny, because at the root, they're the same characters, right?

In TOS, Kirk and Spock where my favorites. But in XI, I find McCoy advanced to the top, with a tie of Scotty and Sulu for second place.

Likewise, I never cared much for TOS Uhura, but I'm quite fond of XI Uhura, whom, all respect to Nichelle Nichols, actually seems to have a back-bone, something I know they wouldn't really allow a woman, let alone a black woman, to demonstrate back in the 1960s.

It's a bit surreal to me. Anyone else find this true?

Well Chekov and Sulu are both a lot more entertaining than they ever were before.
Uhura was obviously far more than she ever was before.

The good thing about Scotty and McCoy is that both the 'old' and the 'new' complement each other and I don't feel one is better than the other.

Kirk feels the same, just younger of course and more dynamic.
Spock felt a lot younger than Nimoy's. I mean the Nimoy from the original show.

My favorites from TOS are Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. In Trek XI, Kirk and Spock are still my favorites but McCoy falls further down below with the rest of them.

The new Chekov and Uhura were definitely an improvement over the originals, though.

Well in TOS Kirk and Spock were and are still my favorites. I have always loved Kirk and Spock, they have always been favorite charcters than any other charcters of all the shows and movies. I have switched to favorite shows and movies over the years, but one thing has stayed the same is my favorite charcters. After seeing the new movie, I loved these versions of Kirk and Spock too. Actually after seeing the movie, it got me into wanting to watch TOS all over again. I now see why I loved the TOS so much back in the day. So my favorites Kirk and Spock has not changed, I love them even more now after seeing the movie the first time. So I actually love both versions of them. I also got to liking McCoy as well. In which in the past I thought he was okay charcter but a little crazy. But I changed my mind about him after seeing the movie and rewatching TOS and I actually like him more now then I did then. So he has became a new favorite of mine. I now love all three of them no matter if there from TOS or STXI I just love both versions.

I was a Kirk fan then, I am a Kirk fan now.

I do like all the others, and I certainly like the new Scotty a little more than the old one.

I agree wholeheartedly with you, but I believe that the best casting they did was for McCoy. Karl Urban did a great job as a young McCoy, cantankerous and short of temper. I loved him in Doom, but this role really brought out his acting. Also I always wanted to know where "Bones" came from.

McCoy was my favorite in the original, and he's still and will always be my favorite (although--I feel sacrilegious saying this--he's even more so in his new incarnation, thanks to Karl Urban).

New Kirk and Spock are about even with the old, but what surprised me was how much I like the new Sulu. I had never really seen John Cho in anything but a minor role in a couple of Ugly Betty episodes, but he made a huge impression on me here. The character will never overtake McCoy or the rest of the Big 3 for me, but he's probably #4 now.

Kirk had always been my favorite character, but in this movie, Pike and Chekov were by far my favorites (Pike was fantastic). I've never liked Uhura, and still don't particularly (I may like her a little less now, actually).

Pike is the best, that is true.... I mean improvement-over-the-original-one like. Not that the old one was bad, but nuPike (yikes) rocks my socks. :p

Sure, but this is what this film was all about. He was a total nonce at the beginning and grew to be a sort of grown-up. That was one hell of a character development for an action flick.

McCoy had always been my favorite in TOS, but XI made the preference gap between McCoy and the others that much wider. Go Karl Urban!

I'll say this: I prefer TOS Sulu than XI Sulu. It's no slight to John Cho, but aside from the action scenes, TOS Sulu simply spoke more often. Maybe he gets more confident as the years go by? Still, for now, what was once near the top of my list is now in the middle.

New versus old...

Kirk - improved a bit
Spock - stays at solid #1
Uhura - big improvement
McCoy - decreased a bit, but Urban has a tough act to follow
Sulu - no change
Chekov - no change
Scotty - decreased a lot; can't stand Pegg in the role, he's totally screwed it up. :p

Kirk and Spock were my favorites in TOS with Kirk way ahead of Spock, then it would be McCoy. The others I kind of lumped together. In STX1 my favorite was Kirk by far, then McCoy, then Pike. Sulu, Scotty, Chekov, Uhura and Spock were all pretty much tied for me but loved them all.

Loved Kirk and Spock best in TOS (Spock a big number 1), but always liked McCoy and Uhura a bunch as well. I particularly liked McCoy in the first season or two, where the writing was better for this character, and you could really see McCoy as a brilliant medical professional instead of just a foil for Spock and Kirk. Of course, I'd seen Deforest Kelly in many things before TOS, and I'd always liked him a lot.

I liked TOS Zulu fine, but Takei didn't get much of significance to do - Chekov seemed unnecessary to me, didn't really care much for the character until the films, and the Scotty character while endearing, was a always a bit...much...for me. .

I pretty muched LOVED :techman: everybody in XI...especially Quinto's wonderfully shaded performance as Spock. Pine's Kirk was dynamic and appealing, probably the happiest surprise in film for me. Urban nailed McCoy in a very brave performance, and Saldana as Uhura simply rocks! I'm so glad the writers gave us a complex, fleshed out Uhura. Yelchin as Chekov is a huge improvement IMO, charming and funny...Cho is surprisingly good as Zulu, quietly confident.

I REALLY liked Pegg as Scotty. I know his performance is controversial for some, and no disprespect to Doohan, but that character needed an overhaul for the new era IMO (dons flame suit). Pegg came up with something that was a nod to old Scotty but fresh and insoucient - his performance really tickled me.

So my faves are still Spock and Kirk, but I think as an ensemble the film has a marvelous group of actors. I wouldn't change a single casting choice. And as a huge Bruce Greenwood fan, I gotta say Pike is just hotter than hot in XI!
