Diet & Fitness Support Thread

Hi all! Just checking in before I head out for my 5 mile run. I've been goofing off on the computer too long and now it's bloody hot out there! :(

I ran 10 miles in two hours on Saturday. (That's not too shabby a pace for slowpoke-me.) Yay!

Where is everybody?

I'm feeling very discouraged right now. I ran 10.6 miles on Monday, and while I felt fine during the run, I felt like complete crap afterwards. My 10 mile run the week before was great ... but this one left me aching all over. Two days later my feet and ankles still hurt! And taking anti-inflammatories makes my heartburn so bad that the antacids aren't effective, so I have to choose between joint pain and stomach pain. Oy.

Plus I went to the gym yesterday, and I almost died doing my usual lunges. I switched to 20 pound dumbbells instead of the 25-lb. ones I was planning to use, and I still had to quit after a couple of reps. My left hip and glute were killing me. I could barely walk when I stopped. :(

I'm taking a total break for a few days and hoping I can get back to normal. I also ordered some new running shoes. I probably shouldn't be running long distances in the ones I have - they're getting a bit old. I just hope I can get back on track to run my half-marathon in May.

Wah.

Sometimes when I get that after working I find out later it's due to a cold or some other thing I was aware of yet. Hope your break brings you back to your usual form.

Well I've done 4 days this week, have reached a weight platue, but am feeling better about my condidtion.

Off for four days of skiing next week...

Good job, kim!

I'm heading out to run 6 miles in a couple of minutes. I got my new running shoes last week and they have helped considerably. I ran 5 miles on Tuesday and felt OK afterwards (unlike my miserable 10.5 mile experience the week before).

I also did the last two workouts for the particular section of the weight program I'm on, and was very pleased with my overall progress. Now I get to take a week off of weight training before starting the next section.

Six weeks until my half-marathon!

I did 40 minutes of spinning last night. Yeah me! :)
Dear god, I think my heart would have exploded in my chest.

I love lifting, but cardio kicks my ass. I've never even been physically able to jog for an entire mile.

They say time-off is important to prevent over-training. Me, I'm not in danger of that. Last night I has a board meeting after work so no workout and tonight I'm going to a wine-tasting party that starts at the unparty hour at 5:00 so no time to workout. Thankfully I have a pilates session scheduled for tomorrow morning then I'm planning on circuit training on Sunday.

Good luck on the half-marathon. That's pretty impressive. :)

I prefer weights and pilate myself but there are so many benefits to cardio that I make myself do it. Besides, there are so many outdoor activities I enjoy which require cardio endurance (biking, skiing, hiking, rollerblading, etc) that it's worth it to me to suffer on the spin bike during bad weather. :)

I haven't been in the thread for a while. It's nice to see the folks still here. I had a great work out today - 25 mins running on the treadmill, 15 mins on the rowing maching and 20 mins on the cross trainer. I've been enjoying my cardio the last couple of weeks. That's good because it was hell's own trouble a couple of weeks before that. I've entered a couple of 5K races in the next couple of months. I'm entered in a half marathon, too, but I won't be running as I've had a year off from running due to illness/injury and so even 5K is a challenge for me at the moment!

I need to get back into weight training, too. I like the shape that weights give me and toned muscles are good for fighting the fat even when I'm sat on my ass at my office desk.

Welcome back, WillsBabe!

I also like weight training in addition to cardio. I've found that strength training really helps prevent injuries when I'm doing long-distance running ... I'm much more likely to have joint pain when I'm running w/o also doing weight training.

I did pretty well this weekend. I had pilates on Saturday morning then did over an hour of circuit training on Sunday. Tonight I'm planning on some spinning assuming I'm in the mood for it after my dentist appointment.

I ran 10K on Saturday and yesterday I did 3 miles with a mile of intervals (sprint/recovery laps) in the middle. Still feeling good! :)

I think I'm talking to myself again ...

I ran 11 miles today with no knee pain! YAYYY!!! I think I'm in good shape for the half-marathon (May 10).

What are the rest of you up to?

On Day 3 of a new diet. That means counting calories in and out, subtracting and seeing if I can zero it out. Got a lot of weight to lose, unfortunately, but that's what you get for eating like a 20 year old nearing 50.

Down 4 pounds so far, probably mostly water weight. Used to love running, and I want to get back to that rush that accompanies 7-13 mile runs at 8-9 minutes a mile.

I fear that's about 20-30 pounds away though... at least.

I did five mornings at the gym this week. No big plans, just trying to get in good shape for some water skiing this summer.
