Did you hear the one about Babylon 5 being the setting for a MMOG.

It’s not a joke, I wish it was. What is it with some studio’s. There’s nothing wrong with making money off your IP – that’s the whole point after all. But this kind of thing just smacks of stupidity and greed.

jms has spoken a few times about (B5 related) projects that get presented to him every now and then, but ultimately come to nothing for various reasons. Here’s an example of one - from 2007 - that will be particularly depressing for all the on-line gamers.

The link is to a testing system holding the short article – which will be amongst a pretty hefty update to B5Scrolls, sometime next year – so none of the buttons work on it. ; )

Though that will be taken down in the next day or so. So here’s a more permanent link to the same thing over on the Facebook page set up for the website – and which contains some stunning 3D modelling work for *another* abandoned B5 related project.

Not at all surprised someone tried to make it happen. Indeed, I recall the first time I played Mass Effect, seeing this view and thinking to myself "now THIS is what a B5 game should look like!" I'd still like to see it happen in some form or another.

Getting some of the details, rather than hearing about some vague project that came to nothing, it makes me wonder just how often a single individual faceless clown at Warner has managed to kill off ideas like that. The original negotiations were going fine! I mean, whoever it was. What's the qualifications to get a job like that.

In the corporate world it could be as simple as a memo coming down from On High saying that they needed to get X number of dollars more from existing IP this quarter. Corporate drone sees that somebody wants B5 so he/she/it simply increases the price on it and any other properties that people are interested in. Chances are that enough will cough up the extra dough to meet that corporate goal.
