Did you enjoy DS9 the first time you watched?

I think that the "Emissary" is very bad. I mean,it wasn't as good as the other (also bad) Star Trek pilots.
Then I watched the Valiant yesterday....and I began questioning the writers of the Trek franchise,because:
a: If you build a battleship (which is 5 times larger than the E-D),surely you only put torpedo lauchers on it,no cannons/beams,and turrets,
b: The only unit comparable to the Red Squadron in my opinion is the Hitlerjugend

And today I watched the "Little Green Men" and it was good. And I will watch the whole thing when I finished TNG S3-S7

Cardassians are awesome. I got hooked on the show because of Garak and Damar.

DS9 is great, but I remember watching Emissary when it first aired and not liking it (I like it now, though - I was nine back then, and my attention span was limited). I literally got hooked later because of episodes featuring Garak, Damar, and Weyoun.

I think that the Encounter at Farpoint was clearly intended as a joke (space jellyfishes and such) but the Emissary was serious about some wormhole aliens who were considered to be gods by the Bajorans and selected Sisko to be their "Emissary". But,if we consider the EF to be a serious story,then both of them sucks.

The first episode? No, in fact it gave me second thoughts about watching the rest of the show. The first viewing of the whole series was different though. It became my favorite series pretty early in the run and remains my favorite to this day. The episode that got me hooked was Progress. Not exactly the most exciting episode I've ever seen but it showed that the writers were committed to their characters and it really began the development of my favorite character in Trek.

I enjoyed it the first time. The first season isn't DS9's best moments but which ST series has a strong first season ? As far as I'm concerned I was hooked from Emissary and couldn't get out after Duet.

Yeah. I like to say DS9 follows the same curve of excellence that TNG follows, but gets there a bit sooner as well.

The episode "The Jem'Hadar" was a turning point for me. From then on I really got into it.

Yup. When that Jem'Hadar ship destroyed a Galaxy class ship--a very subtle visual representation of TNG--it certainly caught my attention.

Personal: I tried to watch the first few shows in 93 and just hated it. The music (then) sucked, no real starship, and it was weird. The whole inside the wormhole aliens and Sisko flashing to baseball....blah and meh, but that was back then.

Tried again in 95 w/Worf and the "new" show....about the same....

The series came on in 03 TNT or Spike late night, couldn't sleep so I put it on and enjoyed it.... Blv it was Sacrifice of Angels...still didn't get hooked but I enjoyed it

05 DS9 was being shown still on Spike TV...had nothing to do so I sat down and watched TNG Masks and some other forgettable episode. I knew DS9 was next, so I was hoping it was as good as I remembered from 2 years before....Tacking Into the Wind/Strange Bedfellows was on....I was hooked. Watched through about 3 or 4 times. Still tear up on the Visitor and last scene in What you Leave Behind.

I loved DS9 from the get-go. Yes, some season 1 episodes weren't very strong, but I was told to stick with it and I'm glad I did.

I loved all the series.
The first time I watched DS9, I remember thinking it started off a little slowly. And I was worried it was going to focus too much on the Bajorian Religion. But as it went on, it got so good. I loved the Space Station Community life it showcased.
It is still my second favorite series, next to TNG.

I remember being really excited about the premiere... And felt pretty let down by the end. I think the only great moment was Kira admonishing Bashir, saying that his "frontier" was her home. The rest of the 1st season was just abysmal, as was most of the second. I didn't start really paying attention until The Jem'Hadar and The Search. After that, the show found its legs and the stories were more consistently engaging. I think it helped that TNG went off the air around that time and more creative capital was being spent on DS9.

To the OP question: Nope. I hated it - it was boring and claustrophobic. Once the Defiant was introduced, however things started to improve. Now it is my favorite Trek show.

Question 2: Was there an episode that got you hooked?

Yes. I thought the personal story of the lead character Ben Sisko was a heartfelt and touching tale of a man who lost the love of his life. Now trying to relieve the pain while adjusting to raising his son without his wife. Not sure if he wanted to stay on a space station and deal with the complex politics going on in this region of space.

The concept was bold. The crew would have to deal with the problems themselves without the assistance of Star Fleet, and some issues the crew would have to deal with and couldn't simply warp off to another adventure. It was the 1st trek I thought the characters would have an increase chance of dying--which I didn't want because from the start I had an investment in them. They were on an ancient mining outpost by a race, who I thought, were the most 3 dimensional characters ever invented for Star Trek.

The station would also be a simply of terror for the people Star Fleet hoped to make them members of the federation. Sisko had to juggle with the turmoil of these issues compiled with a young crew, and a first officer who didn't trust him. I was blown away by the wormhole, and the loads of exploration could be done in the Gamma Quadrant. This show was truly at the edge of the frontier.

I was hooked on episode 1, the brilliant writing was all there... until season 4, the characters devolved into shot happy idiots; throwing everything they've learned out the window for war mongering brutes. Later the Federation was there all the time, it had dumb Worf on the show, an attempt to boost ratings but actually lost ratings, the show was all about War from that season with the Klingons to the Dominion War in the middle of the 5th thru the 7th season.
The series, to me, lost it's focus and it catered to a cult group of audiences who crave things blowing up every 15 minutes. It became a show I loathed and I moved on to better shows like The X-Files. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine will always be the show that could have been... and never lived up to its potential.
