Did you dislike The Skrreeans in Sanctuary?

I did.

Their entitled attitude really irked me.

It's the typical attitude that some immigrants have.

Come into someones country ,and expect everything to change to fit them.

I didn't like them either. I didn't like how they became aggressive about immigrating to Bajor. Bajor finally gets the squatters out (the Cardassians) and here come the Skrreeans with their demands that they be allowed to settle. I mean... who the hell did they think they were anyway?

What would have made the story more interesting would be if their were something specific about Bajor that they couldn't live without or would have extreme difficulty finding anywhere else in the galaxy. (Like the Ba'ku planet effect only it works only on Skrreeans or something like that.) As it was there was a perfectly good planet for them to settle on and it seemed more like whining than anything else when they were so aggressive about it being Bajor where they settled.

I'm pretty much a Bajoran rights activist irl (as I'm sure quite a few forumites have probably noticed) so yeah, they really annoyed me. It was all good to start with, and then it turned into a nightmare because they wouldn't listen to a simple "no". The best part about it was that they were offered somewhere else to live and they turned it down - right then they need a planet to live on, so if it couldn't be Bajor then unlucky.

Not yes but.......

Oh to be a Jem Hadar 1st w/the Skreeeeeeeeeeeeean ships in my sights.

Totally unwatchable episode. Skreeans are exactly what is wrong with 'alien-of-the-week' episodes. If they are going to do AOTW, it should be done well, like Tosk.

Furthermore, it is absurd and insulting how the Skreean punk psychopath's death at the end is played up as if it is a tragedy. That was no tragedy, it was awesome! :techman: It's too bad that they all didn't get nuked.:vulcan:

I wouldn't say it was something about immigrants, but I didn't like their attitude. They acted as if the universe owed them something, as if they had a right to other people's things. I don't know where it came from...

OTOH, maybe they would've made that space blossom and done good for Bajor...

Meh, they were militant in pursuing their pressing interests. Can't say that really bothers me. It's not a great episode, but I think it's a bit better than it sometimes gets credit for.

Funny thing is, they got liberated by the Dominion.
Anyway, you realize they were meant to be annoying, "foreign", ugly.
It was a very clever episode, although the ending didn't quite convince.

If they had some kind of prior claim to Bajor. Or a portion of Bajor, their ancestors lived there thousands of years ago, or there's a Devil's Due like document deeding a valley that now has a heavy population.

More than just little princess wants a pony.

I also though the "skin flake" bit was just... gross. It made me completely unsympathetic towards them almost from the onset. I'd be like "***... I don't want you on my planet either."

^ Yeah, I think the skinflake bothers me more than their overall attitude to be honest. No, I'm not a big fan of the them, or the episode for that matter, for reasons already explained.

Though I believe you could have phrased it better, I agree with everything you said in this post.

This is about how I felt. I actually said aloud, "Ha ha! Serves ya right!" when that stupid kid got owned.

Yeah, absolutely despised them and that's also why I despise the episode. I think the episode is very well written and the Skreeeeeeeean's characters are perfectly believable, but yeah, I just get angry watching the episode because the aliens are so dislikeable.

People who were subjugated for some time, but demanded to settle on a planet across the galaxy because of a vague religious prophecy. It's hard to feel sympathy for pushy religious fanatics, add to that, their culture didn't have equality in genders. And apparently, the Dominion didn't even care if they left. Ouch. That's like the Borg not assimilating the Kazon.

Bajor didn't need them. They just recovered from a coup that would've evicted the Federation from DS9.

And the Federation gets off on helping people. So they probably got a new world better than a continent of Bajor.

If the writers intentions were to make this an episode sympathetic towards refugees and immigrants, they failed. They made the Skrreeans unwanted house guests that you had to be total dicks to in order to get them to leave.

The Skreeans were over aggressive in their determination to move to Bajor. Especially since they had already gotten a lot from The bajorans and ds9, and it was a very poorly thought out plan, move into an area that was very iffy about being able to be farmed rather than a more sure thing like the planet Dax found.

I rarely thought that Bajoran leadership was anything but pathetic, but that meeting in Siskos office was very much on target. If the Skreean crops had failed, the Bajorans would have had to jump in and so they were asking to move in and have them take the responsibility for them if they didn't beat the odds.

Hey guys: This is really old thread but this episode was cleverly written to make this race of people "other" but there is a thin opaque veil between us and them. As difficult as it may seem, they are us, right down to our quarrelsome nature, capacity for self rigjteousness and petty jealousies, to their sloughing skin. There but for the grace of God go I. We just tend to wear the mask, as part of our evolved sensibilities. The episode has more going for it that it may seem at first glance. DS9 is killer, including themes that reflect well on our own reality. To me it is even more excellent than other Star Trek.

That doesn’t sound anything like real immigrants. Real immigrants come to a country for a better life for themselves and their family, and try to just live their own life within the country, whether or not that is living the same way as people around them. They don’t demand anyone else change, just coexist with something they aren’t used to.

Just like the Skreeans, they didn’t demand any changes, only asked for unused land, just the Bajorans falsely assumed they were lying about being self sufficient.

The writers overdid it by making them unpleasant and making males of the species that inherently helpless and combative.

First of all, welcome to TrekBBS @rocky01 . As a new member you are probably unaware, but we ask members not to revive old threads like this. If it hasn't been active in over a year we like people to just start a new thread on the subject. You can always link back to the old thread if there is something specific you want to address from it.

@JirinPanthosa , I think you are unlikely to get a response given the post you are replying to was made over 8 years ago and the member hasn't posted anything since July 2010.
