Did TNG take itself too seriously?

I'm saying that if the Neighbor has worked hard to get where they are, and continues to strive for their accomplished life...whatever arrogance they have is a fully deserved one.

Meanwhile, if "The Guy" is a wastrel who refuses to do anything to better himself just because his accomplished neighbor isn't afraid to point out his failings...well, then he really is just a wastrel.

To answer the op, no I don't think it took itself too seriously. The show had its tone and it went with it for good or ill. All I can say is that I think we got seven years of excellent television.

STAR TREK: The Next Generation is the best series in the franchise, is it not? In GENERATIONS, when Guinan says of the Nexus, that it's "... as if joy was something tangible and you could wrap yourself up in it, like a blanket." Replace "Nexus" with "TNG" and you start to get a basic understanding of the level of satisfaction this show brings. You've taken your first step into a larger world, in other words.

A philosophical friend of mine once noted that "even 'bad' sex is 'good' sex" and that's definitely how I feel about some of the episodes of TNG that have slipped just below par: even a bad espisode is still good! And when you think of how much TNG has given to the other series in the franchise, it's really incredible!

Jonathan Frakes in DS9, VOY & ENT. Sir Patrick Stewart even revisits Locutus in DS9's pilot episode. GENERATIONS offers an aged William Shatner one more opportunity to sport his girdle and hairpiece in the name of James T. Kirk. I mean TNG just gives ... and it gives ... and it gives ... and so on. Even to Denise Crosby who felt that TNG wasn't good enough for her - ha! - what does TNG do after Yar's killed off? It keeps allowing her to suckle at the teat of this brainchild of Gene Roddenberry time ... and time again!

Everything anyone could want to watch STAR TREK for is present and accounted for: A stellar rolecall of the brightest stars in the industry, during the 8O's ... and beyond; GR's direct involvement; Imzadi action for the Romance Novel lovers in the audience; Space Exploration/battles; Klingons & aliens galore ... the most beautiful women!!! And all you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy. That's all it wants from you. You know? If only the rest of The World were as eager to please as this form of entertainment is ...

Season 3 gets a bad rap, mainly because when it went bad in that final year it went really bad. However, there's plenty of solid episodes and good ideas explored too (and it's not like S2 didn't have it's clunkers, or even S1)

I suppose so. As bad as the worst season 3 episodes get, I don't think any match season 1's The Alternative Factor. And The Children Shall Lead is a very close second. There are maybe 5 watchable episodes in season 3, IMO. Some did have interesting ideas, but poor execution.

I find season three more watchable than most of the modern shows.

Easily so. While there are a few clunkers that are in there, season 3 still has some very fine episodes.

I actually don't find The Alternative Factor too bad <DUCKS DOWN>

My bottom episode is one from Season 3 however, namely The Empath

STAR TREK: The Next Generation is the best series in the franchise, is it not?

7 seasons, highly rated, not unceremoniously cancelled or petering out, still very popular. The TNG subforum seems to attract the most haters; even that says something.

I think it took itself in just the right manner. TOS was a bit corny for my tastes.
TNG took itself in the right manner. I love TOS, too, so not corny for me. There is a certain amount of cheese, but I think that is part of the charm.

Honestly, I don't understand the hate TOS Season 3 gets.

Sure you had And the Children Shall Lead and Turnabout Intruder. Those were as bad as it gets, but most of it was at least watchable. I would say TOS Season 3 is no less watchable than TNG season 1 or 2.

It's hard for me to choose between TOS and TNG overall, and they almost tie as #1 for me, but I think TNG edges it out for me just slightly by a microscopic hair. But comparing either TOS or TNG to other shows, there's no comparison, though DS9 does rank a close #3.

Hate it! The closeups of that woman's face over and over and that nails on a chalkboard musical score, ugh. The whole thing is an exercise in patience.
