I have a thing for broken people in doomed relationships. So I wasn't into it until Tyler murdered Culver and Burnham started really relying on Tyler to keep her sane in the Mirrorverse.

Similarly, I wasn't too fussed about Culber/Stamets until Stamets was being put through those 133 jumps. The scene of Stamets being found clutching Culber's body at the start of this episode was A1.

It was poorly written. The sexual tension never really ramped up between the two. No chemistry. Tyler was annoyingly wimpy in the context of their relationship which didn't feel natural. SMG isn't a good actress.

Also, I don't watch Star Trek for the romance.

it worked okay for me, although it is completely eclipsed by what Stamets/Culber (sorry: Culmets) have

The fact that people think the Stamets/Culber relationship was better shows you just how bad the Ash/Burnham relationship is/was. There's was hardly any depth at to the Stamets/Culber relationship. The writers didn't even give it the time of day.

I like both characters. And...I thought it was very "realistic" (it happens all the time that two hurt, damaged people find their way into a relationship that will not end well).

But, I didn't think it was really great. You almost knew it was doomed from the start because they wouldn't want to tie their main character up in a relationship that quickly.

The Stamets / Culber relationship was the best, most mature that Trek has yet portrayed.

It was the PORTRAYAL and the chemistry that made Stamets / Culber believable and engaging. The relationships of Riker / Troi, Worf / Jadzia, Torres / Paris all had far greater screen time, but were childish and contrived compared to Culber and Stamets, which had a very natural, mature, developed feel, much more like a real couple.

I like how the Torres/Paris relationship developed, but they totally rewrote Paris' character to make it work, which made it somewhat unbelievable. He goes from being a playboy with 5 girlfriends back home to a monogamous relationship with Torres and no cheating? But you're right about the other relationships on Trek, there was no courtship between Riker and Troi, they went from being friends/colleagues one day to marriage the next, same thing happened with Worf and Troi, and Chakotay and Seven. Jadzia and Worf wasn't believable. I liked how Odo/Kira's relationship developed, but they again had to rewrite Odo and Kira's characters to make it work. I thought how the Burnham/Tyler romance developed was believable, but their separation had no effect on me.

Thank you, I had forgotten about the Odo/Kira relationship. I should give that one credit...I think that one came across ok!

I think it's one of the weakest aspects of the series, so far. I found it to be one of the more uncompelling romances in a franchise known for uncompelling romances.

I'm still wondering how the writers managed to completely crap on Martin-Green? A capable actor hamstrung by just plain bad material. Pretty much every other aspect of the show (including the Klingons) have managed to eclipse the star and focus of the show.

The most realistic relationship Trek has ever portrayed is O'Brien/Keiko by a wide margin. Might not have any passion at all, but it was a very realistic portrayal of a long-term relationship once kids were involved. Honestly, it's the only example in all of Trek history of a stable nuclear family. Trek is weirdly full of never-married middle aged people, sprinkled with the odd divorcee and widow.

My guess is it's because Burnham was Bryan Fuller's baby, and once he was gone no one really wanted to make a "protagonist focused" show any longer.

Huh. I thought it was fine, if too quick to happen, but some of the resultant scenes have been fantastic between the two of them. The most recent scene in which Burnham confronts Tyler and all the cards are laid on the table--I thought that was fantastically acted. I didn't entirely buy the growth of their romance, but I buy them as two people who need each other now.

I honestly think Latif is one of the gems of this show. He gives compelling performances in at least three different roles thus far. And Martin-Green has begun to get scenes in which she plays some incredible nuance (see: after killing Connor).

Not in a good way. I don't think it was well executed. The "relationship" started with everyone's favourite plot device Tilly telling Burnham (and the audience) that she liked him, it would have worked better if Burnham had come to the realisation herself. As it was, it kinda felt to me like Burnham was dating Tyler because Tilly told her she liked him. I'm someone who reads romance novels by the bucket load, so if there is half a hint of romance I'm there shipping it. But I just couldn't get behind Burnham/Tyler - it was forced and the actors have limited chemistry. SMG's chemistry with DJ or JI or MW is way more.
