Did rock music really die in 2008?

Is it dead?

It does look like some new bands are coming out, but they're not getting numbers like older bands did.

Rock music is by no means dead. You're just not going to find a lot of it on playlists that push pop and hip-hop acts. 2026 in particular would otherwise seem to be the year of rock as a ton of both new and older acts have dropped new albums and singles. And look at the various music festivals that play every year--rock acts tend to dominate those and often to sold-out venues.

Rock is alive and well, it's just not sitting at the big dining table as in decades past. It's making noise out in the backyard instead. But if you look for it, you will find it.

Exactly this. What's popular now is due to trends, and that too will eventually fade out leading to new trends. Nothing new. There's a lot of good music out there waiting to be discovered in all types of genres including Rock. Contrary to popular belief, I don't feel streaming services such as Spotify are a great place to look as those tend to focus more on what's popular, thus feeding into the loop. I've had much better success discovering new music through my Youtube feed.

And I agree, music festivals are a great way to discover new bands, as they're usually a mix of established bands and some that are eager to make a name for themselves, and in my experience, it can lead to some great experimentation where musicians can become inspired via cross collaboration.

Case in point, here's a musician I discovered several years ago. Here he performs a song that sounds like it could have come out of Paul Simon's catalogue. Ok yeah, this one isn't quite rock, but the point still stands. You can discover new rock music if you know where to look.
