Did people cheer when Nimoy's Spock showed up?

I went to a 4pm showing of Star Trek yesterday, lot of people in the theater but certainly not packed, and when Nimoy's Spock showed up there was a loud bit of cheering and applause. I was genuinely surprised by this. I expected that stuff to happen at the Thursday midnight showing, or Friday night or later Saturday night showings. But a 4pm viewing? Amazing. Simply amazing.

Don't know if they were fans like us or casual folks who simply know who Leonard Nimoy is and how legendary his Spock character is, but either way it was a pleasant and even heartwarming suprise and event.

When I left the theater, I heard two teenager or very early 20 something kids say, "dawg I ain't never watch Star Trek, but I'm gettin' this on DVD!"

I was like wow, I never, ever, EVER thought Trek could be percieved as this cool and reach these type of very mainstream film goers.

I had a similar experience in the IMAX this morning. A girl next to me was talking about how this would be her "first Star Trek experience." There were applause both when Nimoy appeared AND when Scott said, "I'm given her all she's got, captain!"

Just saw it today. Nimoy got a cheer when he showed up. During the closing credits, many of the actors got cheers. Other than Mr. Nimoy, Karl Urban got the loudest.

Well I just saw the movie a second time, this time a 7:30 showing. No cheers or applause when Nimoy showed up, but there was some laughter when Kirk said "bullshit". There was a lot of laughter when Scotty said "I like this ship!", but otherwise this was a much quiter crowd. Well it is Sunday night, but I was waiting for another round of Nimoy cheering and applause and there was none. :(

but I clapped for him...

I got the feeling that there were more Trekkers or at least casual fans in screenings with the Nimoy cheering, whereas the crowd I was with tonight was likely a more general movie going bunch.

I went to the Sunday 4pm showing and yes, there was applause when Spock shows up. Generally a good time was had by all the audience. A lot of the audience stayed all the way thru the end of the credits. But there were no post-credit snippets.

While I kinda don't get the same William Shatner vibe from Chris Pine - I really liked Quinto's Spock (the nose is thicker but I could believe that I was seeing Spock). I think Chekov's accent was a bit overdone but still liked it. I too thought that Spock was actually Scotty before he turned around. I didn't really like Scotty. While I dig the fact that Scotty was a hands-on engineer - I didn't really like him being played for comic relief. Zoe was HOT! I liked Sulu. Bones was the pick of them all. Karl Urban did a superb job.

Getting back to the applause - there was a smattering of applause for Terminator Salvation trailer that was showed before the movie.

They didn't cheer in my fairly packed theatre.

I think they were glad to see him, but they didn't cheer.

They laughed at some of the in-jokes. The "I'm givin' ya all she's got captain!!!" from Simon Pegg...and the "Fascinating!" from Zach Quinto sorts of things....

But they didn't cheer for Nimoy. It was more a good karma FEELING sort of thing...at least that was the vibe I got.

I do remember someone sniffling like they were getting teary-eyed when Quinto and Nimoy met face to face at the end of the movie. That scene in the shuttle/tram hangar bay moved some folks in a way I didn't predict.

No the people at my theater, which was only about 1/3 full on Thursday night, was kind of quiet during the whole thing.

All theaters are different. I was sort of surprised ten years ago this month when THE PHANTOM MENACE got the underwhelming response it did in one cinema but across town the crowds were practically creaming their pants.

Where do you all go where there is cheering and clapping?

In the UK, there is the odd cough and sneeze.

Bloody American's.

Pig flu.

In both showings I went to (7pm Thursday and Friday) the crowd cheered at Nimoy appearing. It was a great feeling. They also cheered at the end when Nimoy completed the "Space, the final frontier..." speech.

At the preview screening I attended (Trekkers were dressed in character) Nimoy just about got a standing ovation.

A women next to me actually started crying. She scared the hell out of me.

There was no cheering but I got warm inside with almost every Nimoy scene. This man has entertained me so many years of my life that I just have so much respect for him. There was applause at the end with Nimoy's voice-over though.

I happened to be in Vegas and saw a matinee showing on Friday. The theater was relatively quiet throughout the entire move only letting out few laughs. I saw it again on Saturday when I came back home (Cincinnati) and the crowd indeed cheered when Nimoy made his appearance and at the end of the movie.

There was a lot of applause in my theater when it ended. Satisfied, happy claps that made it worth it.

I saw it yesterday late afternoon at an IMAX outside of Boston. It was a little early to get the after work crowd, but still a mostly full turnout.

There weren't any instances of applause, but everytime a character did a classic move, it got a warm reception. Especially classic McCoy-isms.
