Did people act surprised when you told them you were a Trek fan?

I think a lot of people assume I do since I like various other Sci-Fi and 'cult' TV and movies. For those that don't assume, I seem to get more of a surprised reaction saying I like Doctor Who, than I do saying I like Trek. Odd.

I had a wardrobe full of Trek shirts all through jr. high and high school, and I wore them everywhere, so everyone knew back then. There was some good-natured teasing about it, but they recognized that I didn't really care what they thought, so it was never an issue. I even wore a tng replica communicator pin and Kirk/Spock(for president)'92 button on my jacket!

Compared to the derision I get these days for the kind of music I listen to, the bullying I got at school for liking Trek was NOTHING.

I showed up to a Halloween party at church a few years ago dressed as a Vulcan in a Starfleet uniform, and it surprised a lot of people. The funny thing was that there was another person there in a Starfleet uniform, and neither of us knew the other was a Star Trek fan.

People are ALWAYS surprised when I tell them I love the original Star Trek. I guess if I were someone else, I wouldn't think I looked like a Star Trek fan, either. I guess I don't fit the description.

It's never really come up in general -- but the only person that I discuss the philosophical implications of Trek with is my husband. :)

SpaceProg, I LOVE your picture of Data and Spot!

No one I'm friends with is a Star Trek fan and considering I didn't used to be one, that's not really a surprise. It would be nice to have someone real to talk Trek to ocassionally though.

One of my friends at work is a Star Trek fan so whenever we have a project to do up on the 3rd floor, we chat about Star Trek. Other than him, the only other person I can talk Star Trek with is my dad.

No, most people seem perfectly fine when I mention my hobby. My kids though think their dad is a big nerd. They did like the new movie, so maybe there's hope for them yet. ;)

I never liked Star Trek until recently so luckily I didn't have to go through high school being called a nerd. My wife jokingly called me a dork last week when I told her I was going to buy the Star Trek blu ray but in reality she doesn't care. I don't have any friends who like Star Trek and that is why I joined these boards.

I always had a passing interest in Trek. I'd catch an episode here and there. I always enjoyed other Sci Fi movies and other things that are considered "geeky" (computers, space, art, comics, etc.) I was never really INTO Trek it until recently.

While some of my friends "like" it, but none of them are huge fans. So, like the poster above me, that's my reason for joining these boards. While the Trek fan clubs seems somewhat interesting, I don't think I'm ready to take that leap just yet.

So to answer the question at hand. I don't advertise my love of Trek, but if it comes up, and I tell someone; yes, they're usually somewhat surprised.

Seems like when I tell people I am a Star Trek Fan, they roll their eyes or get the blank "I will not say anything more" look on their face or they suddenly need to be somewheres else

I get it all the time for some reason.

But when I tell them I'm a horror movie fan nobody bats an eye lol
I get exactly the same reaction from people.
The reaction is even more severe when they find out that I'm also a huge B5 fan. Apparently B5 has an even greater nerd stigma attached to it than Star Trek.

People are normally shocked. But it's not exactly something I advertise.

I'm 25, it's not exactly "cool" to be a Star Trek fan.
Yeah, same thing here. The only person who really knew was my girlfriend, and she let that one out of the bag when the new movie came out. Of course, now everyone is a star trek fan so its not such a big deal anymore. I know just last year though id probably be ridiculed for it
