Did people act surprised when you told them you were a Trek fan?

No, no one's been surprised. In fact, some people simply guess it about me anyway.

No. It isn't as if I go around telling people all the time, but I can't think of a time anyone's been particularly surprised, either.

i think most people would have me pegged as being a trekkie anyway so i dont feel the nedd to announce it as such. i dont hide it from people, but i also dont advertise it either. i'm quite a private person with most people i know so i dont really let that much about myself out anyway.
My conversion into being a trekkie was quite a gradual one and i still wouldnt call myself a die hard trekkie - i'm useless with all the tech side of it.

If I tell someone they usually laugh at me. My friends kinda understand my obsessions (One made me a start trek card for my birthday

My parents know of my fandom - they know I have DVD's, read Trek fiction, they read the Trek fanfic I used to write as a kid and bought me the VHS releases of DS9 and VOY back in the day.
Telling friends or people I meet, though - that's very much another story. The upcoming movie is alright to mention (remember, Abrams is cool and it's got Sylar/Shaun of the Dead in it) but I keep my fandom of the TV shows very much to myself.
The select friends who do know describe me as a 'geek in disguise' - ie I can mix well with the 'normal' people but in reality I'd squee if someone bought me a model replica of the Defiant.

I keep a Star Trek calendar hanging in the office at work. The only people who usually comment are other Trek fans. The most recent comment was from a long time coworker who finally commented (and avid TOS Trek fan) that she pegged me as a Star Wars fan...I told her that liking both was and is possible for me. The only difference for me is that I prefer Trek TV shows and Star Wars movies.
I think it surprises a few people but most are not surprised once they hear that I was a compsci major in college LOL. The people who are most surprised by my scifi nerdiness are guys who are nerds themselves and we start talking about random stuff then dive into Trek and they are balled over when I mention some minutae of Trek. Then they'll usually pretty happy to engage me in Trek knowledge. 
I guess I don't give the stereotypical "appearence" of a Trek girl, or at least I have made active attempts at defying the nerd stereotypes by not dressing like one.
However, I am proud of my Star Trek association and am not embarassed about telling people I'm a big fan. Ever since the start of the internet revolution, I feel there is no need for embarassment about being a nerd.

If anything, I'm the one surprised by the fact that they, too, are a ST fan. It doesn't matter if they're someone I've known for several years, or a complete stranger who sees me with ST novels or DVDs.
For example, back during the Christmas shopping season of 2007, I bought a SW novel for my sister, and TNG Season 5 DVDs for myself. The cashier in the DVD/CD section, a college-age(?) woman, started talking about SW and ST, both watching and reading them, including a new series of ST novels--Titan (which I had recently learned about on TrekBBS)--and I told her about New Frontier.
Then, when I went to another part of the store to have my sister's present wrapped, the woman there (also college-age(?)) also started talking about both of them (ST & SW). Two people, one visit to one store!

No, because then I wouldn't be able to fire disrupters, and you never know when that might come in handy in an office setting.
Frankly, I don't care if people think I'm a nerd for being into Star Trek.

Do you think the new movie may change that?
I was grocery shopping in Wal-Mart the other evening. A mother and her 11 year old son were looking at the ST flash drive wristband on a box and wondering what it was. Being the shy little thing I am
, I spoke up and explained. They had already purchased the new Playmates Enterprise and both were fans. We spoke for awhile, I answered some computer questions Mom had and told them about TrekBBS where they could find other Trek fans. It was fun meeting a fellow Trek lover and I thank publicity for the new movie that it happened.
When people find out I'm a ST fan, they just give me an odd look and shrug. They don't seem surprised, but there does seem to be some disdain. An extended silence follows my confession.

It would surprise me if I told some one I am a Star Trek fan!
For me it's not the Star Trek but the fandom that I am less forthcoming about. I have met a few Trek lovers by being open about it, if there is ever a conversation going about TV shows I will always say I'm a trekkie. It's great when you meet someone else who loves it though they usually only have one series they have spent time with. I finally found a female friend that loves DS9, thank goodness I brought it up! But.. even she referred to me as a "weirdo" or somesuch when I mentioned reading forums. So the forums, novels, action figures and level of devotion stays under wraps in conversation.
I do read the novels on the train though. Still waiting for someone to say, "OMG I read that.."
