He's clearly counting from the complete redesign they did to turn it from the Discoprise to the WNMHGB-Prise.

I am thinking he knew the Yorktown was ready as a replacement, and that it was being readied for Kirk. A surprise he was keeping.

Kruge suspected Genesis was really a weapon, broke from Chang. Yorktown may, with its flaws, have been a death trap to get Kirk killed and out of the way.

They never counted on Kirk hi jacking his own ship.

This may mean that Grissom (USS Maddox style) was a sacrificial lamb to begin with, along with loose cannon Kruge.

Kirk wasn’t supposed to be there, and it set back the Rittenhouse/Cartwright agenda. Nimbus III was all pacifist block.
