My interpretation of this content is that the danger of death from cell damage is only when you're "newly accelerated." This suggests that after some time, there is an equilibrium or stabilization, whereby you won't be at risk any longer. If that wasn't the case, you'd die from just flossing your teeth (drawing blood) or skinning a knee. Far too dangerous to live for very long.

I thought the premise of this episode was clever, but not well thought out. Think of the gas molecules in the air... you'd end up struggling to move around anywhere as you slowly push those molecules out of the way. And then, of course, what of oxygen intake? You'd suffocate, because the air won't move fast enough!

I felt that the acceleration was poorly depicted. You'd see people standing around, not moving at all for many minutes. Then later, in a different scene, the person moves a great distance. Like Scotty. It just didn't add up. I think it would've been better to show visually perceived slow movement, but it would've been technically very hard to do realistically given the special effects technology of the day.

Agreed. TNG did an episode where the ship is about to explode in battle with the Romulans, but the whole tableau is frozen in time, and only a returning shuttle party can move around at normal speed.

In another TNG, Geordi and a female crewman were "phase shifted" such that everybody assumed they were dead, but they were walking around the ship like invisible ghosts, passing through walls and even passing through unshifted people just like air. But they never passed through the floors, even though gravity was holding them down (for some reason) just like the rest of us.

Star Trek will probably always play fast and loose with "fun situation" rules.

Good points. With regards to the TNG episode with Geordi and Ro, I guess that suggests that there's ample air even in the "shifted phase" plane of existence. What they should have done with Timescape, is that the landing party should have been equipped with an oxygen supply. So they'd be breathing their own "time contained" air... and thus solve the problem of trying to breathe air that isn't moving.

Apparently only the males became sterile, not the women.

The radiation that accelerated the few surviving Scalosians, might have directly killed off the majority of the planet's original population.

Interestingly he does move forward a bit between scenes, which I think is a nice touch. But I believe the real reason, out of universe, that he was there was to serve as a doorstop to keep the transporter room door open. Otherwise Kirk and Deela couldn't have just walked right in. (It's also handy to have Scotty there to show that Kirk has been decelerated by the antidote.) In universe, Spock ordering Scotty to the transporter room makes very little sense.

That's right. I remember now that they were going to use the Enterprise crew as breeding stock. But wouldn't it take decades for that large number of Scalosians to die off?

Eventually perhaps, maybe that's why the Scalosians were in such a hurry to repopulate their planet!
