Did Gene Roddenberry make a mistake in Star Trek?

Nobody is perfect.
I don't know if the thing this thread is about is a mistake but we all make mistakes.

I imagine replicators are used a lot to feed and cloth citizens and maybe they just built their own homes. I just figured no one had dibs on land anymore. And others just inherited their houses from family.

Do the replicators need a source of power or don't they? Sometimes they do (Voyager and its rations), sometimes they don't (children of time, given their primitive technology their replicator shouldn't work anymore).. They just can't be consistent about that. If replicators need energy then having many of them is useless unless you have an enormous source of energy. In which case it's not free food and free clothing!!!

Solar panels.

They have virtually unlimited energy, you don't even need a warp core, fusion reactors should be enough to easily take care of all energy needs.
In children of time it's possible one of the Defiant's fusion reactors was salvaged, the first things they replicated were probably fusion reactor and replicator replacement parts so they could keep them running for generations.

I'm not here to ask about the economics of the Federation, I just have a simple question.
Did Gene Roddenberry make a mistake when he said there was no need for money in trek?
Look at all the examples of people buying and selling things.

James

It was a remarkably brain fart moment that was in totally denial of the way society as we know it works. Deny people money, they will reinvent it. Unless everyone in the Federation is totally self sufficient and needs to trade with no one, you need money.

Money at the core is an idea not a thing. An economic score keeping system, delayed barter points. Most money today is not even the little pieces of paper, it is code in a computer, without a physical representation.

When Kirk said "We don't use money" I read that as currency is dead. Everything is biometrics and under the covers. Your thumb is your bank account, like DS9.

Unless energy is free.

No, Solar panels are not the answer for everything. There are many uses that solar panels are inadequate for. The answer to "everything", is nucler fusion, supplimented to various degrees by solar and wind energy according to local conditions.. Once nuclear fusion is developed.it will be an almost limitless source of energy for even the most energy intensive purposes.

Nuclear fusion is always twenty years in the future, it's been that way for nearly forty years...
