Did DS9 have the worst looking cast?

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
I don't mean to be shallow, but I was thinking about this earlier. When you look at the characters, they're all not so easy on the eye. The only normal looking people were the Dax and possibly Bashir.

TOS had Kirk.

TNG had Picard.

Voyager had basically everybody except Neelix and Chakotay and the same goes for ENT.

Everyone was ridiculously good looking on all of the shows with some exceptions, but DS9 is the real standout for me.

Um... what is "normal looking"? :vulcan:

And no, I don't think it had the worst looking cast, for starters I think the female cast is the hottest of all the shows (is Kira "abnormal" looking? I find her more attractive than either of the Daxes), and the male cast is versatile in looks, especially as there are more people in heavy makeup than in most shows, but there are still attractive and interesting guys there (including some in heavy makeup ;) ). Not everyone looks like they've come out of a catwalk, which is a plus. What do you want, a show where everyone looks the same, like those teen shows where you can't tell women apart, nor the men, since they all look like Kens and Barbies?

There's also this thing called "a matter of taste". You think Chakotay is the ugly one on VOY? You'll find that the majority of women on the VOY forum disagrees with you. I don't like him because he was dull and boring (the reason why I rate VOY men lower than any other show...) but plain or ugly he certainly wasn't.

Oh, and Spock is much hotter than Kirk. ;)

DS9 was never as in-your-face with the cast's sex appeal as some of the other shows were. Guys did not take their shirt off at any occasion, the women were dressed sexy but not in too obvious way (except for the Dabo girls, who had to because it made sense in-universe) and it didn't look like the show was treating them primarily as sex objects (I think that Seven and T'Pol were great characters, but the producers didn't do them any favors with the catsuits and everything). It almost never seemed like the show was going out of its way to suggest to the viewers: "Look! This woman/man is sexy! They are to be the sex symbol! Now drool over them!" Which doesn't mean that there weren't people to drool after, but it felt a lot more natural and not as forced. (ENT was particularly bad in that regard, the decon scenes come to mind in particular. Not that I mind watching guys take off their shirts all the time, but it was a bit funny to see a show trying so hard to be 'sexy'.)

Don't forget EMH and Phlox...

I think that they actually had perhaps the most attractive set of female regulars of any Trek series and there were some good-looking guys on the show too, so no, I don't really think they were the least attractive cast.

What a waste of disk space this post is.

no problem to turn dukat into a bajoran, and kira into a cardassian. with this competence in cosmetic surgery, no one must live with the face of a miles o'brien.

Miles O'Brien might prefer to live with the face of Miles O'Brien, because it's his face, not someone else's.

Yea I think the only guys that weren't really lookers in costume and perhaps without were quark odo and obrien. The women besides kai winn were all sexually attractive more so than tng females and the rest. Enterprise you had hoshi and tpol which were alright looking but hoshi has no curves shes just meh. Voyager had seven and bellana and seven had a really weird looking face with those big bug eyes. Bellana was kind of meh.

Then your thread should have ended right there...

Just for fun though I'll play the game. First, you can't factor in Odo, Quark, Rom, Worf, Morn, and all the other characters in heavy latex since you can't really see the actors.

I see nothing wrong with the rest of the cast. Others have mentioned O'Brien as being ugly, well that's a matter of perspective. He has distinctive features and curly hair and doesn't look like a GQ model, but does that make him ugly? O'Brien is supposed to be the everyman; a husband and father, working with his hands and getting stuff done. Carey Grant or Clark Gable in their prime, or even George Clooney couldn't necessarily pull that off.

For the female characters, Kira's look changed every season. I didn't care for her hairstyle or uniform in the first season, and I think she looked much much better in the last couple of seasons. What does that say about Nana Visitor? Was she ugly and then became more attractive? No, they simply made changes in her hair and costume over the years. Normally the actors have very little input to those kind of decisions.

I lived and/or worked downtown for 16 years. I've seen ugly. The DS9 cast isn't ugly.

oh yes, Phlox w/those talons for footwear

I'd likely disagree with your assessment. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder though.

Of the countless Trek debates that have occurred inside my own head, I have to admit I have never thought about that one. After brief thought, I guess I'd go with TOS. Although I don't know how much the outdated hair and clothing styles play into it. Probably quite a bit.

On a side note, I've been noticing that Kira seems to be pretty popular as an attractive character. She would be way down on my list, below Ezri, Jadzia, Seven, Leeta, Kes, Ro, Hoshi, T'Pol, and B'Elanna. I would at least put her ahead of Troi, Crusher, Janeway, and Moogie though. :techman:

I certainly don't think any of them are ugly. Colm, Rene and Armin may be more regular-looking guys than, say, the men on Voyager, but ugly they ain't.

I was going to post, but I'm too busy plotting vengeance on those who insulted Ezri and/or Hoshi.

Btw, can anyone spare some antimatter?

Well, I know a few women who find Worf attractive. I guess it depends on how one feels about the Klingon look, and the opinions are split on that one. I think that Cardassian makeup is attractive; Klingon, not so much, but Worf is not bad-looking for a Klingon, and Michael Dorn is very attractive IRL.

Odo is a shapeshifter who sucks at forming a humanoid face, so his unformed facial features are a part of his character. The Ferengis are, well, the Ferengis - not every alien race is going to look attractive according to human standards. To humans and some of the other alien races like the Bajorans, they may look like ugly little trolls, but Quark might be considered handsome among the Ferengis.

That leaves O'Brien. It's not like he's ugly, hideous or deformed, he's just an ordinary-looking guy. As Kirby said, he's supposed to be an everyman character, so Colm Meaney's look works for the character. It's refreshing to see someone on TV who looks like a normal guy, rather than a pretty boy or rugged square-jawed hunk.

If DS9 was about a bunch of genetically engineered people living in a Gattaca-like society, then it would make sense to have everyone look stereotypically pretty, like those Augments from ENT. But it's not.
