Did Brooks' eccentric acting put people off?

The ability to turn any subject on any board into a TNG bashing session never fails to amaze me.

To answer the original question: No, it was the ever changing network schedule that eventually killed my interest in DS9. I thought Brooks was a good actor and wasnt too worried in the first couple seasons since it took Stewart a couple seasons to settle into his own, same for any new series.

Oh, just go into the other fora; they are trashing DS9 (and the other series) there. But I know what you mean, it's beyond me how one can only express his love for one series by constantly pointing out the hate for another. Happens all the time on this board. Guess that's just the nature of the internet.

It's all the 'my captain's better than your captain' nonsense. They're all going to be different from each other. Everyone has their own preferences.

He was a bit rough the first few seasons, but once he ditched the hair, Brooks was AMAZING as Sisko! When Sisko smiled, it was something to behold. I think he's one of the warmest characters in all of Trek, and I credit 90% of that to Brooks.

I like Avery Brooks and think he is a great actor; during the first seasons of DS9 he was not always on his best but as the series progressed and got better so did Avery Brooks. I've seen him in other things and he really is a good actor.
I would not say he is better then Patrick Stewart but still very good.

I liked his acting just fine. He talks just like Benjamin Sisko, and he intimidates Worf.

Since Brooks is the one playing the role, how could he not?

But William Shatner was a bad actor among other bad actors (excluding Nimoy) and was never meant to be taken seriously. Brooks' Sisko was an off the wall caricature of a lunatic in the midst of several great acting performances, which made Brooks stand out as a maniac amid his crew. The entire vibe he puts off doesn't make sense when he converses with the rest of the cast. It's like he's on another show completely oblivious to the people around him: talking loudly over them and then softly under them, starring at them for long moments, inexplicably, without speaking, broadly smiling when nothing funny was said, ect...Maybe I'm missing something that you're seeing, but to me it's very, very bizarre.

I agree about the flawed characters part, though. DS9 had far deeper dives into each character's psyche which NG lacked. I think they were too focused on making the NG cast represent the eliteness of Starfleet, so any flaw too grave would look out of place. That's at least how I justify it in my head. That has nothing to do with the wackadoo performance by Avery Brooks, though, who is otherwise a very fine actor.

@dabynars First, welcome.......Second you may want to take time to check out the rules for posting here. Here one:

The thread title confused me a little as I was aware Avery Brooks could on occasion be eccentric in person but I'd never thought his performances were that way. Passionate and committed, definitely, with an undercurrent of 'I could smack you in the chops any moment' too but, I don't know, is that eccentric?

I'm going to re-watch The Visitor tonight, it'll be emotional.

That about sums it up. :)

However, I tend to give new recruits a pass on this rule upon their first "offence" since you can't really be expected to know all the rules right out of the gate. Plus, it's generated some new discussion, so no harm done.

Having said that, welcome aboard the TrekBBS @dabynars! Just try and keep the above rule in mind when posting in the future. Happy posting!

This is honestly the first time (at least that I can remember) that I've been exposed to the idea that Brooks was a bad actor.

It was certainly a performance, but bad ?

    I'll give it some thought.

I've heard some people say Sisko's acting was terrible in the early seasons and they gave up on the series. Personally, I think the heaviness of the first episode probably turned a lot of people off. They wanted something more like TNG and DS9 was such a left turn.

I remember being annoyed by the weird accents he put on certain syllables. I expected to hear it again when I went back and watched it all of BBCAmerica, and I swear I can't hear it.

Sisko always sounded preachy, but I liked him as a captain at least when the Defiant came along with the war. If you saw Shatner's interview with Brooks, Brooks seemed difficult to interview. Shatner did his best.

I didn't like the religion aspect of DS9 and so I could see that turning many off from it. DS9 was better with a rewatch. Watching it today though, the facial alien prosthetics are sometimes noticeable. I'm not sure how well the show would hold up in HD.

I think that interview was just Brooks laughing at the whole idea.
