Did anyone watch the Oscars?

I have an old classmate on facebook who worked on the show, and she said she begged them to let her put Bill Paxton into the montage at the last minute, but there wasn't time/money/whatever to do it.

I've only watched bits and pieces of it as my parents watched it. I think that the La La Land cast and crew should get something, at least some sort of consolation prize for having to go through that embarrassment.

Well, they had already won six Oscars, including Best Director, Best Actress, Best Song, and Best Musical Score, so it's not as though they went home empty-handed. They had a very good night, which probably went a long way towards the taking the sting out of it. :)

Ahh yeah, good point. See, didn't watch it all the way through and hadn't realized it won so many. They did take it very gracefully, so there's that.

Oh yes, I didn't see any seething contempt on stage after the mix-up, the LaLaLand people seemed genuinely happy that Moonlight won. So strange to see they went through 3 victory speeches first, though.... why some stage hand couldn't have grabbed the mic after the first or second speeches is a mystery. Or cut the mic... something.

I do try and catch the Oscars every year. Given up years ago on hoping for my favorite choices to win - at face value it's a look into how the Hollywood elite perceive themselves. I think of it as the polar opposite of the People's Choice Awards and that's kind of interesting. It's like the disparity between the critics and audience score on Rotten Tomatoes - it's very revealing.

The key is not to emotionally invest yourself in any of the contenders. It was wonderful to see Trek nominated for a category that they are very deserving of. Future physical prints of Beyond will read: "Oscar Nominated" and I think that's wonderful that it was recognized. Oscar noms have great value, too. As a Trek fan, I loved that Star Trek and Star Wars were both even mentioned - how often do Star Trek and Star Wars movies come out in the same year and also get recognized by the same measure of excellence?

It's interesting to see the same cynical, sanctimonious reactions to the Oscars each year from some. "I'm not watching a bunch of Hollywood assholes give each other awards and jerk each other off," etc. Well this is essentially what is happening during the show - some are entertained by that particular display and some not. But please don't kid yourself, you're not a better person for avoiding the Oscars! Nor are you a better person if you do watch it. ;) There's just no correlation to moral superiority in this case.

Yep. They handled an awkward situation very well.

And given that LA LA LAND had already won six awards, Faye Dunaway can probably be forgiven for not realizing that anything was amiss when she glimpsed LA LA LAND on the card.

Snakes on a Plane by Christa Faust. Okay, I've never actually read this one, but I remain sincerely awestruck by the fact that she got over 350 pages out of Snakes on a Plane. :)

Fantastic Voyage by Isaac Asimov, which many people don't even realize was a novelization.

That amazes me.... I've seen the movie several times and while fun, I'd have to wonder how you got a novel that big out of that. Unless there's a huge lot of stuff the film didn't include.

I know of Fantastic Voyage and I wish I had a copy of that. I saw one years ago in a second hand bookshop and it was in really good condition but they wanted more money for it then I was willing to part with. One thing about the novel too is that they had an actual kind of explanation for how the shrinking worked.

The movie was good but I feel it could have been a little better in parts and a a little longer. The ending felt a bit off because wouldn't the wreckage of the submarine have expanded inside Benish?

I think Barry Jenkins would agree with you. In fact, I had come across an article in which he complained that the producers of "La La Land" were disrespected in that mix up.

I gather Faust was given free rein to flesh out the backstories of the various passengers.

Oscars are dumb. They don't reward the most artistic movies because they shy away from contemplative and foreign language. But they also don't reward the most popular movies or most entertaining movies.

Instead they reward talky political movies that are a little artistic and a little entertaining. Winner is always 'Decent movie that most passes our litmus test'.

You want to watch the most artistic movies, look at Sight & Sound poll. Most entertaining movies? Just watch the films your friends say are good. Oscars give you middling of both. Worthless.

I find the Oscars useful because they occasionally introduce me to movies I probably never would have watched otherwise. The other night I watched Hell or High Water, something I'd never have heard of if not for the Oscars, and it was a fantastic movie.

And the show itself is usually fun and interesting to watch, unless one particular movie is dominating. I just wish the orchestra would stop playing off the "bit players" mid-speech but let the big stars go on and on well past the time limit.

Nah, it was a simple error. No need to give awards for being mistaken for someone else.

Actually La La Land was a fun movie. Did they have a prize for a musical?

The Oscars aren't broken down by genre, except for Animated Films having their own category. There are no awards for Best Drama, Best Comedy, Best Musical, anything like that.

Amidst all the blame game and finger-pointing, I couldn't help thinking the system is broken. They need to come up with a more foolproof way of handing out the winner envelopes to the presenters. Basically, you have two people from PWC on opposite ends of the stage, each carrying a briefcase of duplicate envelopes containing all the winners in all categories. How easy is it to manually pick the wrong envelope for the category??? I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner in the Oscars' 89-year history.

While the Golden Globes gets two annual best films: one for drama, the second for musical or comedy. Naturally, THE MARTIAN won the second category hands down
a year or two ago.

And Matt Damon won best actor in a musical or comedy for that same film.

No.........1st world problem. I'm sure they won't suffer PTSD.
No, of course not. It's about the process and out of respect for those that got caught in the middle of it. I don't think it would have been such an issue if one or two people went on stage to accept the award, but they had the whole cast and crew up there and already into their acceptance speeches. As I said though, they took it well.

Obviously this is going to get them to look into the process more carefully and we'll possibly get a more efficient system out of it. This was bound to happen sooner or later. The fact that it had to happen with the best picture award was unfortunate.
