Well, I found the problem. My linux installation had become corrupt (according to W10, of course), so I had to delete it and re-partition the hard drive. It looks like Windows 10 doesn't like to play well with others, at least on my system.

Edit: No sooner did I say that, the whole thing just froze up twice. Deleted my Linux partition for nothing. It looks like I'm going to have to reinstall Windows 10. Again.

Oh man that sucks...

I found the resource manager also in the start menu under Administrative Tools..

Have my new PC with Windows 10 now for a few weeks and so far little to complain apart from the initial "shock" about the flashy start menu (which i quickly eradicated by installing Classic Shell).

It is stable, works reasonably fast and the only issue i had were acess rights to an externa drive i had from my Win 7 system that took a little bit of effort and nerves to solve.

It could have been that, because my video card is 7 years old, and the latest driver for it is a Windows 8.1 driver. I did find a really nice replacement that's at least as powerful as my current card, and it's only $60. Hopefully I can save up and buy it before it's outdated, too.

That said, Chkdsk had found corrupt sectors on my HDD. Still, so far I haven't had any freezes yet, so whatever happened, it seems to be working! I just don't want to have to install everything all over again. I just got my system how I like it.

Yeah, I'm sure some of the more annoying bugs will be worked out the longer Windows 10 spends out in the wild. It's a good OS, it really is, though I do wish I could still have my Linux dual boot. This is the longest I had Linux (Ubuntu and Mint), and I was really getting to love it.

I guess those annoying popups weren't encouraging people to upgrade fast enough, so in early 2016 Microsoft is going to make Windows 10 a recommended update through Windows Update. So depending on what you've got your WU settings at, you could get the update automatically downloading, or even get the install process started automatically. (Although Microsoft is claiming that users will be "clearly prompted to choose whether or not to continue".)

Not really happy about this, but can't really say I'm that surprised, either.

While I'm using Win10 on this machine, I'm going to have to go with the "not continue" option on my backup machine if it is downloaded.

In theory, the processor will handle it, but the graphics card apparently doesn't have much chance of doing so. (Laptop so....).

I think Windows 10 just doesn't like to play nice with other dual boot OSes. Then again, I'm sure there are people who have dual boots that work flawlessly.

On a side note, I was wondering if my back up drive (Western Digital My Book Essential 2TB) would still work once my laptop is upgraded to Windows 10. It's a drive that works with Windows 7 and I'm not made of money. So it would be good if I could still back my laptop up using it.

Shoudn't be an issue - I have one and it works no problems with Windows 10. My 3TB also worked find until the drive inside died.

Windows 10 Fall Updated (version 1511, Build 10586) has gone up today but it appears it's staggered, some getting it some not. Apparently all will have it by Sunday evening. If you're impatient you can get it with the media creation tool and create yourself an ISO.

Fucking around with Windows update on my network and fast track builds for Windows 10 chewed through about the better part of my monthly quota of 95GB last week.

Something weird happened, and I'm not entirely sure what, and I lost all of the data on my 1 TB secondary drive, where I kept my movies. So all of my movies, months and months of work, are now gone. I couldn't back them up because the only backup drive I have is 10 years old and I use it to save documents and images should my primary drive fail.

So I bit the bullet and installed Linux Mint on that drive hoping Windows wouldn't fight with me, and so far things seem to be running smoothly. This is so frustrating, and I never had this issue with Windows 7. I'm starting to see things with W10 happen that I have been seeing with Firefox ever since it moved to the fast update system.
