Did anyone get a Windows 10 invite?

I think I will turn cortana off, I don't find it very helpful, its 'responses' are often confusing (or inaccurate) and by turning it off, the search will only work locally which is more helpful to me than Bing search.

I did ask her to tell me a joke. Her responses were pure dad joke.

I did turn her off though. She's a bit pointless, what with needing access to where you are just to ask what's in your calendar today.

RevdKathy wishes me to tell you all that we did laugh at one of her jokes.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

I don't know but it was poultry in motion.

As I said, pure dad joke.

You should have asked her about halo or what she is wearing.... Or ask her to marry you. Some good responses. "open the pod bay doors hal" gets a HAL impersonation...

MS really screwed up on the media creation tool . You have to change your PC region and language to USA to get it to function. Downloading now as I write.. I do not want to wait for the official download thing to start.... So I am using the tool I found here...

https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10

Australian MS site but the download is actually USA specific....

Overall I like this - went into Powershell and uninstalled a lot of the junk like xbox and installed Start10 and I'm all set.

My vague impression is that my laptop now boots faster, but I need to test it. My laptop doesn't have an SSD so boot times have always been kind of a downer there.

I shut off all those "help me by sending all my info to the Internet" settings, too. Fuck that.

Probably will shut off Cortana, too. If I need to search for something online, I'll use a browser, thanks.

turn Cortana off I found was great because it now means that search is useful.

Hey J. Lovely screenshot.

Just curious: How did you add the additional labels in the start menu above File Explorer?

Right-click any empty space in that item list and pick "Properties." Go to the Start Menu tab and click "Customize." Pick whatever items you want in there!

In all fairness, I suppose I should leave Cortana on long enough to at least get a feel for it, but I suspect I'll be ultimately turning it off. I have a couple of friends who use virtual assistants on their smart phones, but from what I've seen, the only "advantages" are that they can't do anything on their phones without annoying everyone around them, and they waste (IMHO, of course) an awful lot of time just trying to make the phones say something cute. :D

It installed last night so I'm currently trying it out. I have some minor issues with it (my money program won't start and I'm missing some icons, though I know that's me as it appears on J's screenshot)

The important stuff seems to work though but I'll keep playing around with it for now.

Really liking it so far.

Minor gripe: That silly-named "Groove Music" app actually pauses when you minimize it.
That. is. so. stupid.

Tempted to install it on my Macbook to get rid of silly MacOS.

Shockingly, they also finally added an option to delete your previous Windows installation, in the case of an upgrade. Previous versions left those files behind (often eaten numerous gigabytes), and deleting them often broke the upgraded OS in nasty ways. It seems MS has done a better job of splitting out the upgraded OS from the previous one so it can now safely delete the old files.

It's an option under Disk Cleanup. A few people have told me they've run it with no issues at all, so I'll probably do it soon, myself. I'll get almost 30GB back!

I replaced my old Vista box with the Tech Preview in April. Never had a problem. Ran the upgrade on my Window 7 laptop lastnight. It completed and booted without error. But every time I open Windows Explorer(The file manager), the desktop freezes. Thought may be due to the AV, so I uninstalled it before bed. I'll have to try Windows Explorer again tonight.

Yeah, one of the most common problems I've seen reported is 10 not playing well with certain AV programs. Best to disable them for the time being.
