Did anyone get a Windows 10 invite?

What is Spybot like now? I haven't used that one in years and I generally have issues with AV programs as I like to collect game trainers.

They seem to set AV programs off and that really pisses me off.

It still runs rather heavy. Avast hasn't run into any issues with it so far and neither has Window's AV. I just run it by itself and it does ok.

Only problem I had was with Avira on my mom's Windows 8 laptop. It did not play nice on it. It had some kind of memory conflict on it. It did ok via Windows 7. I tested it out on my laptop and took it off asap once the Windows 8 issue happened.

But for some reason it doesn't work on the newer versions. She had to have her laptop reset due to it. The computer people we've gone to for years put it on there instead of Avast and that's how the issue started and it led to a Bad Pool header error.

I just use Windows Defender. Haven't needed all that other stuff at all. Not for "just browsing". If I intend to go to a sketchy site I start up the virtual machine.

TrekBBS used to use a terrible ad service, that would often have virii and malware hidden inside the ad server so that members would get virus and trojan alerts. It still happens, though not here, not for some time. Google cracks down on it, but all it takes is one ad on a perfectly legitimate site to screw with your system. Internet/Network security is what I used to do. Trust me, it's very common, and you don't have to go to a sketchy site to have it happen.

Yeah, I spent over 20 years in IT as a sys admin. I know how common it is, and a few ways to avoid it.

Exactly. It's generally in the coding itself. Found a couple just via a local comic book store's site. Some jerk inserted some code into their ads and it was spotted by Avast. I let them know the next time I went back into the store. They didn't even know about it, but they let their webmaster know and she got rid of it.

Then there's really no issue. The way I have it, and the way @Random_Spock has their system setup is just fine, does the job and takes few resources. You can sandbox it, that's fine, but overall it's more trouble than it's worth for the average user.

Yep. It's better to be safe than sorry, and when you can be safer and use little in the way of system resources, it's win/win.

Given that my computer is in its seventh year of service... I really don't want to mess with anything. I don't want to lose MediaPlayer. I don't need any more change in my life just yet... is that so wrong?

There's no reason whatsoever to change.

I love Windows 10 but had I had the choice I might have stuck with 7 had my hardware situation not changed as much as it did.

Yeah, there's no reason to change, except for that pesky "dropping of support of Windows 7" that will happen, oh and the aforementioned "Windows 10 no longer free" happening, no reason at all.

Well had I not had a GPU and motherboard failure I would have still been using Win 7 and not cared to update. It was the hardware changes that made me decide to take the plunge.

New SSD has arrived and already problems. Eeeeewwwww

I'm trying to use the software that came with this SSD to migrate my Windows to the SSD but it won't run it just starts and hangs with nothing happening.

Can't even close the program via task manager and have to do a full restart.

It's the Disk Migration software that came with the drive.

There must be an easier way to do this. I tried system restore but as the drive image is larger then the SSD that was a no go as well.

Right in the middle of a backup without the system image in the hopes I can do it that way. I did manage to install Win 10 vis a DVD image but not sure now. I'll try doing a file restore once this is done.

I'm pretty sure I was able to migrate just by using a freeware partition cloning package, if that helps.

It helps. The Samsung software just does not want to work on my Windows so I did a manual install and did it that way. After playing around in steam for a couple of hours I noticed one thing. YES game load times are much faster, and even Windows is much faster BUT the big thing I did noticed is once the game is loaded there was a lot of caching going on and that made it stutter a bit. I never had that issue with my mechanical drive. I found it a bit off putting, so I put my original drive back in. I will use the SSD as a backup drive. It is faster for sure but that stuttering just put me off.

Support will be dropped in 2020. And just because something is free doesn't mean it's a good deal...

And I changed my mind again. The SSD is now back as my Windows drive. Only that niggly issue still there with my games.
