Dialogue in Voyager

Virgin1 are showing Voyager now on week nights at 8, and watching it the past couple of nights it seems to me that compared to TNG the dialogue on Voyager seems snappier and there's an energy to it that I don't seem to get from TNG (although I do still love TNG).

Is it because the actors bounce off each other better? I haven't seen enough of Voyager - a bit of season 6 and season 7 - to properly judge really.

I like TNG, too; but it has a more formal tone to it than VOY, IMO.

Picard and Troi are very proper, and Riker is so driven; Geordie works a lot, too. Beverly is older and fairly serious. It's funny, but Data is the wittiest one of that bunch.

The VOY crew are pretty young. B'Elanna, Tom, Harry, Kes and even Seven are all young. And they have the jocular Neelix and acerbic Doctor. Seven can also be dryly humorous.

Having just watched it on Virgin 1 there's definitely more of a mix of characters than there was on TNG. There's more of a buzz, even so early in the series. Season 1 of TNG felt... stilted, and uncomfortable.

I found it interesting that Janeway insisted on the formality of being addressed as "Captain" instead of "Ma'am" -- yet quite often she addressed her crew by their first names instead of their last names and/or ranks. I wonder if she would have done this had the ship never become stranded in the Delta Quadrant.

^ I would think that since Tom, Belanna and Harry were the only ones to actually have a last name, She probably decided that first names would do just fine.

I think at first she was strict and very Starfleet. This was just a ship that got lost and needs to get back home. In the fisrt season she really just used Ranks for the most part but as it progresses she relaxes, always stricta nd stern no doubt but she does relax. By season 3 this isn't a ship witha lost-mixed crew and Janeway knows this. Its a family.

7 years togather on a cramped ship, you kind of tend to throw out regulations.

I think I recall early on when Janeway called Harry as Mr. Kim and B'Elanna as Mr. Torres. But as the years went by, it changed of course, as they became one big happy family far from home.
