Since we have a ton of rewatch threads, I have decided to switch over to a episode(s) of the week type format. I will do two hours of DS9 on most weeks, and just open the floor for discussion, and if there is no interest, then the thread will quickly go to page 3 and die.
"Emissary"
This opening episode still holds up after almost 20 years of time (Yikes, I am OLD)
The opening sequence still has some punch, as you see the Saratoga get steamrolled by the Borg. War is hell, and it great to see Worf 359, even if it a moment of sadness for starfleet.
First off, while not perfect, it is nice to see the conflict between Sisko and Picard. I mean, the venom is almost tasty. The personal conflict (while still striving for the standards of starfleet) is still some of the best trek, and you see this in that opening bark, however sometimes I wonder if Avery Brooks was a good choice, as he has a unique acting style. Of course, he made the character his own. so what am I talking about...
Poor Nana Visitor, Stuck with a character that comes off as a well, to be nicely, a Witch (i hate the B version of the word), you forget how rough she is at the start. I always happened to like her, but she is unlikable in this episode. Even if it understandable, with the doctor being a punk.
The actress who plays Jennifer is a underrated beauty, and does well enough for her bit part. And it always surprises me what they did with Kai Opaka<sp> as she was a good character.
The other thing is that for those who have seen the entire show, there is a lot of growth of these station of misfits.
And I do love that they moved over the chief from TNG to DS9, where he really grew.
The prophet parts worked, in this episode, but in later episodes it kinda painful to watch, but we are focusing on this two hours...
I think this is the best opener for a star trek series.
8.5 out of 10
