Deus Ex

I love Deus Ex. Easily one of the greatest PC games of all time. Other than a few bugs, some story paths the developers didn't account for, and some atrocious voice acting, the rest of the package is top notch. I love the way all the conspiracy theories are tied together, all the little details you can pick up reading the books and newspapers. Also loved the really expensive gas in California.

I've been playing through it again recently. I noticed that once you're assigned the Rescue Tiffany mission, then go and speak to Savage's lab assistants, they then go on ad say things like "Oh, Tiffany is Gary's only child, the only one left in his family" and I think "OK, better not screw up then. :p"

I also find it hilarious when, in one of the fights with Simons (I manage to meet him in Area 51 having evaded him in the ocean lab - it is funny to see him try and swim with a blue sword in his hand), I just switch on the Aggressive Defence aug (set to level 4) and move a little bit back, then watch Simons utter something like "I've looked forward to this for a long time" before he blows himself up with his own LAM. :guffaw:

Funny little moments, these. :bolian:

I've also really appreciated the final Paris level, in Everett's mansion - having completed the game twice before, at that moment you can pick up small snippets of where the plot's going, small hints of the multiple choice ending. Plus the dialogue with Morpheus is still thought-provoking and interesting. And of course, "A BOMB!"

Interestingly, I also managed to find an augmentation upgrade canister in a whole concealed section of one of the maps, which I had never visited before in all the times I had played Deus Ex. Amazing game, this. :D

What a shame.

Where exactly? It took me a couple of plays to meet Lucius DeBeers in Everett's house, but other than that I think I've been pretty thorough about exploring the levels.

it's in the underground section of Vandenberg - there is a whole underwater section there, and the canister is at the bottom of a flooded stairwell, behind a door with keypad access, on a technician's body.

Ah yes, I think I remember that.

My first play-through, I spent *forever* trying to get into the flooded traffic tunnel in Hong Kong. I only knew it was there due to a graphics glitch elsewhere on the map, but I couldn't find my way in! I eventually did locate the route---through the meat locker of a store---but it was pretty much just dumb luck.

I really need to replay this game. I started to create a mod a while back (had a few areas modeled and basic conversation trees implemented) but real life got in the way. However, it was a fun experience.

All this talk about Deus Ex is making me want to play again. I hope it runs on Windows 7.
There's a fairly new Complete edition, which has the original and IW on a single DVD. It works fine on my Vista PC, so I imagine it should work on 7.

I don't know how I only just remembered this. Has anyone else seen the videos on Youtube for the Malkavian Mod?

Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WnBeglPl7s&feature=related

I think it is hilarious the way the dialogue has been re-arranged. The nonsensical dialogue and situations gives everything a dream-like quality. There are more videos if you search for them.

:guffaw: Legendary. :D
The toilet scene was the best moment. :bolian:

I'm still looking for the Malkavian Mod... can't find it anywhere...

"WHO ARE YOU?!"
"I'm your brother and the Mayor and his THREE daughters and I'm Anna Navarre and Sam Carter and I'm Agent Hermann--"
:bolian:

And more silliness:

^ Good stuff.

After watching these videos some more, I think one of the reasons I find them so funny, is because of the deadpan way that JC Denton delivers all of his dialogue.

edit: It looks like I found a link to the Malkavian mod. I haven't tried it myself though.

Yeah, nothing ever got JC worked up, did it? Then again, I guess that makes sense, considering his origin.

I don't know. Paul had the same origin, yet he turned out to be emotional and compassionate.

Meaning Page "corrected" some of the mistakes made with Paul?

Hmm. Perhaps he did, and that might explain a few things - although one wonders why they didn't go the whole hog and make JC more biochemically perfect than Paul, with more efficient use of augmentations and things...

Then again according to the story, JC was raised differently, without the "parents" (who as it turned out were killed under Page's orders) and taught in a Switzerland school, according to the logs later in the game. Maybe this different upbringing led to his personality... although being brought up in a strict school and admitting that he's "not into books"? As JC would say, "I don't know what to believe anymore."

One of the fun things I used to think of was to see what sort of cast might be used in a potential Deus Ex movie. There was originally going to be a movie a few years ago, but for some reason it never got beyond pre-production.

Just started playing the game again. Decided to rescue Gunther in the opening level, but keep him in the cell out of harm's way. Predictably, he's grumpy at me (and at everyone in general) for the rest of the first part of the game. :rommie: Am now back in Battery Park, completing that section without engaging ANY enemies for a change. We'll see how Anna reacts to that in her e-mail later...

One day I'll play this section of the game by slaughtering everyone in my path. One day...

Inspired by this thread, I've been playing the soundtrack CD that came with the GOTY edition. Good times!

I'm this close to installing it again and wasting many, many hours. Somebody stop me!
