Detmer & Ariam

Umm sweetie, this isn't the 90s anymore, TV shows aren't an ensemble of 8-9 characters now, it's 2-3 characters with a bunch of nameless extras. Get with the times, gosh!

Nah, it modern TV. Every character has a plot and there are about 30 of them.

Could Ariam actually be a member of the Binar race?

I'd love to see more scenes of Detmer & Ariam interacting.
Episode: 11001002

Commander Burnham: "A half-blind woman teaching a half-android how to paint? That's gotta be worth a couple of pages in somebody's book."
Tilly: "You own TWO books?"

In the Discovery MU comics, MU Airiam identifies herself as human. Gives a big speech about even though she is human, she has always been treated as a second-class citizen by the other Terrans because of her cybernetic implants.

I didn't know MU Detmer had anything like that. She certainly didn't look it - meaning, both of her eyes were the same color, unlike RU Detmer.

I'm not following.

I have never read the DSC comics, so I don't know what happened there. All I know is that the MU Detmer apparently had both of her eyes intact, so I always assumed that she managed to avoid the injuries that RU Detmer suffered during the battle of the binary stars.
The post you quoted was talking about Airaim not Detmer.

I just hope they establish that Detmer is a descendent of former Heisman Trophy Winner Ty Detmer. The show needs to start embracing early 90's nostigia now that it will be competing againts a Picard show and "Orville."

In the old days one of the rules of a TV show was that you introduce the characters in the first couple of episodes and then give a little backstory as the season goes on. Is it a thing now a days to have the audience saying "Who the fuck is that" after the first season is over. Is this a modern metric of success?
That's never been a rule. Characters like Detmer or Ariam are Disco's equivalent to someone like Walter the dialling technician or Sgt. Siler on Stargate. Hell, in the case of Walter, it took eight seasons before he finally got a name, so Detmer and Ariam are already a step ahead of him.

This thread is also causing me to reflect on how much I enjoy that Disco has running bridge characters, with maybe little glimpses of personality here and there, but they don't force it. How much better Voyager or Enterprise might have been if they realized Kim and Mayweather should never have been used beyond minimal bridge exposition!

They weren't used for anything beyond minimal bridge exposition. That's the problem, they were listed in the main credits for their shows (which should be reserved for the most important characters to the show) and had nothing to do on a typical week other than say technobabble or jargon.
