According to Io9's James Whitbrook, who recently visited Galaxy's Edge, they're already starting to tone down some of the immersive elements. A lot of the food names have been changed their real Earth names, one of the examples he uses is that they changed the Endorian Yip-Tip to Endorian Chicken Salad, and a some of the Star War terminology used by the castmembers has been faded out, so they'll ask if you have the Annual Pass discount instead of a credit reduction, and they no longer lie about what Savi's Shop (the lightsaber shop) sells.

It's probably not a good idea with the First Order around. It draws attention.
It is. You can’t have the sabers out while in the area. They se it as a potential weapon.

Even if you can't have them out in the park, you can still take them home and wave them around all you want there.
Just returning to this, Rise of the Resistance is being hailed as the greatest theme park ride of all time. They run out of the entire daily capacity for the ride every day around noon. So now, we can say without much fear of contradiction Galaxy's Edge is a hit. People really were waiting for Rise of the Resistance to open.

Thus far, all the pictures I see of people posting, the excitement and enjoyment of the rides, and the encounters with the characters at Galaxy's Edge has been positive.
I'm fairly comfortable saying it is a hit as well.
I went to Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland last week. There's only one ride at the moment. Walking around, it looks and feels like you're on Tatooine, though. It's impressive to stand under the scale replica of the Falcon, too. The cantina was fun, though expensive ($15-40 per drink). There's a droid DJ who spins alien sounding tunes, and every once in a while the classic cantina music comes up (though more of a dance version).
There were a lot of stormtroopers walking around harassing the tourists, and a First Order office also came out at one point. Otherwise, there's not a lot to it so far.

Unfortunately, all the reviews, both online and in print, are full of spoilers for the ride. I already know far more than I wish I did, so I'm going to have to avoid those for now. Going to WDW in April and hopefully DLR before that, possibly as early as late January once it opens over there....
But, yeah, the overwhelming consensus definitely seems to be that the ride is terrific and that's all I need to hear.

Can confirm. I nipped into Galaxy's Edge while I was visiting Florida for the holidays last week, and the RR queue was already full by the time I got there. The whole place was jammed, honestly. You could barely see the Falcon for all the people wandering around (made me wonder how people keep getting those photos where it's just them and the ship). It probably was a bit more crowded than usual because it is peak winter vacation time (I might've waited for another visit to go at a less crowded time, but I wanted to at least have a taste of it before any further immersive elements are cut, a la the wishing tree that was getting too many wishes).
It is nuts, though. Even just walking around, everything looks gorgeous. The sightlines are excellent, as soon as you're around the corner, the rest of the park just melts away. I was also especially impressed by all the materials used in construction; I know it's a bit apple and oranges to compare Disney to Universal in terms of house style, but just being able to feel walls that were real metal and concrete, compared to Harry Potter land where wood, brick, stone, and snow are all the same painted stucco really made everything feel real. I suppose a fairer comparison would be Star Tours, which I also did (for the first time since its revamp), and everything in there is very plasticy and flat (and I didn't consider that since the new movie just came out, they'd only be doing the Rise of Skywalker segments and wouldn't be randomizing it). I did like the improvements in the ride, though. Some of the CG was a bit ropey (though thinking about that, some of the stiffness in the route might be down to limitations on how the ride can move, though the Falcon ride was a lot looser (but it's also interactive)), but the 3D glasses really helped with the immersion compared to the old film.
Has anyone bought the "build your own lightsabre" yet? I'm flying back to the UK and for luggage transport reasons (I am thinkng of getting an architect's extendable tube holder tingy) and I'd like to know:
a) diameter of the hand grip/hilt
b) can it be split back into hilt/ long tube bit?
c) overall length for the hilt and then the tube.
I'd really love to see a photo of a tape measure against the overall thing as well.

I haven't seen a custom one yet, but my friend got one of the replica ones. The blades do detach, I'm not sure about the measurements. He got the Luke ROTJ saber, which gives you two necks for the hilt. The more accurate skinny one for display and the wider one that allows you to attach the blade.
I really want a custom one. Although I'd buy a replica of Leia's if they sold it.
