I wonder if D-Mack is as tired of hearing this as KRAD is about what books to read for Articles of the Federation.

I think it's got a long way before it gets to that stage - it's got to get to 'Eav'oq jokes' level of tired first.

Been lurking for a while, felt it was time to start posting.

I have seen many postings here about the What and Who of the Destiny trilogy, but not much discussion as to the Why. Have we heard from David Mack as to why this was the right time for a status quo shaking series?

I'm interested to find out what direction TNG and VOY novels proceed after Destiny wraps. TTN has a strong central focus on exploration. Understanding that some degree of exploration is inherent in a Star Trek series I wonder how TNG and VOY with distinguish themselves from TTN. An example could be VOY returning to the Delta Quadrant and exploring a premise similar to that suggested in "Places of Exile".

The same question could have been asked of either series once they were relaunched in novel form; it seems the answer is that each series distinguishes itself by its particular story arc. For TNG, it's been the Borg Arc, leading into Destiny, and that storyline seems set to continue with Losing the Peace. For VOY, it remains to be seen whether and to what extent Full Circle will follow up on the dangling plot threads began by Golden's entries (Holosama, the rogue changeling trying to undermine the Federation at the political level).

Another way to make my second point would then be: What arc TNG will take to distinguish itself once the Borg-arc ends (be it in Destiny or Losing the Peace or some later novel). I'm sure a big part of the fallout from Destiny will be our protagonists facing a vastly changed galaxy. If TTN's primary purpose/arc is exploration how will TNG be different? Example, TNG could have more diplomacy and politics or archeology as a backdrop than TTN.

Not necessarily from Dave, but the reason is no secret. The books come out October to December, and the new Star Trek movie was originally scheduled to come out in December. The idea was to do a big event to draw attention to the books at the same time that the movie is drawing new attention to Star Trek, but at the same time to avoid doing anything that might conflict with the film's vision of the 23rd century. Hence, a 24th-century epic, with elements of the 22nd century as well.

The movie got delayed to next May, of course, but the book schedule isn't so easily changed.

I am dreading the Destiny trilogy and the books that come after it.

The Borg haven't been handled well in Star Trek in any medium since Peter Davids "Vendetta".

I find this comment hilarious, since this same poster also just started a new thread saying how cool a Borg ship picture book would be. Poor Mack... all that effort writing a 300,000-word trilogy... when all he really had to do was draw a bunch of cubes.

I would pay a great deal of money just to see that. Seriously, I can see it in my mind now and I can't stop laughing!

After reading Greater Than The Sum though, I cannot wait for this book series to come out. For me, the Trek novels I've read recently, including the fantastic Myriad Universes collection, have been home runs. I expect nothing less from this upcoming triology!

The art is not yet finished for Lost Souls. So far I've seen only a sketch of one element for the cover. It's my hope that it will be ready soon.
