Desktop Sharing / Remote Access aps?

Hey guys, Im looking for a desktop sharing / remote access app. I've tried using the app in MS Messenger. Normally it works like a champ for me. However I have one computer that it wont work on for some ungodly reason (however it may be the person Im trying to share with).

So I'm looking for an app (hopefully freeware) that will allow this other person to see what I'm doing on my screen. I wont need them to take control or anything like that.

Any ideas?

Do you have Windows NetMeeting installed? That's what we use here when tech needs to see what's going on on someone's machine. It's also an old enough program that it might get around any problem on either end.

It IS possible to use it in XP. I'm not sure if they had to do any customizing here, but we're using it on an XP platform regularly.

No you're right, I'm wrong. My apologies. After I posted I did some checking and came back here to edit and volia, you had beat me to the punch Question though, how are you connecting to others? Are they folks in your office or folks around the world? I ask because when I tried to look up, it said to use the MSN Messenger app, but it gave me no clue how to. Im wondering if the guy I want to talk with / share with has a static IP address and if I can just put that in there and will it work? Hmmm.

It works around the U.S. via IP, so it likely works around the world, but I've never seen it tested between countries to confirm that.

According to this and this, it's been replaced with/superseded in Vista by something called Windows Meeting Space. I've got no idea as to its worth, but some features appear to have changed from NetMeeting

I wouldn't use anything that was created by Microsoft or has had their paws on it. I personally use logmein. it's pretty nice at least for my purpose. i've got a mom, sister, and brother who are always asking me questions about something on their computer and i don't live that close to any of them really. got to be a real pain in this ass so i can sit from home and sign into their computers to do stuff.

Any of the VNC variants should work nicely - we use Ultra VNC for desktop support and remote installs at work. It's a freebie, so no cost implications.

Windows PCs? Across the internet?

Most broadband routers are designed to keep LAN traffic from propogating onto the internet. You can poke holes in your firewall, etc, but here's what I found that allows you to do what you want, and stay quite secure:


For network connectivity between the two, try the freeware Hamachi.

Hamachi allows you to set up a "virtual VPN", securely connecting PC's across the interneret. It's designed to allow easy connection despite typical router settings, but security is maintained by unique network names, passwords for the network, and 256 bit encryption.

Once they're connected, any of the applications listed above should work like a champ, just used the 5.x.x.x IP addresses in the hamachi network to connect to the host PC.

I'm partial to the remote desktop host built into XP Pro, and realVNC.

I use Remote Admin to support my client sites. It's not free, but I prefer it to VNC for the NT security support. It's a huge time saver for the really big sites.
