Design the Next Enterprise

And a ton of them are illustrations aped from artists that I know live outside of the United States.

Makes me want to reach across the internet and punch some of the people plastering their names across another person's work.

I hope they are going to do something to put a stop to the rampant plagiarism.. someone posted a version of the Soulwolf as their own work, and I saw an early version of the Grandeur also being passed off as "original". Until and unless this gets addressed, I'd be very hesitant to enter.

^I'm not sure why that would make you hesitant to enter? It's not like someone is hijacking entries. They're just using found work from the web. I would be more worried about someone posting something before I entered it.

I'll be adding some identifying marks to my entry, just in case I need to prove later on that it's actually mine.

FleetCaptainFrost, where did you see the Grandeur? I've actually been keeping an eye out for it since I noticed how many plagiarized works are showing up, but I haven't seen it.

In a way, having the submissions put on display rather than simply emailing them in does have its advantages. This way, it becomes virtually impossible for someone to get away with claiming someone else's work as their own.

Now if they could just do something to make that contest page easier to use...

Sheesh! I'd say around 75% of the entries so far are pics or badly retouched photoshops of existing ships like the Enterprise-E or the Aventine, blatant rip-offs of other peoples' well-known designs, lame kitbashes, or totally irrelevant images of Poser models, webcam pics, or scenic space-scapes.

The judges are gonna have their hands full.

That is in a way why I did the graph and Trek STO logo as well as my digital sig.

The judges are going to have their hands full.

On the upside, I think a lot of folks who've legitimately submitted from this site have a decent chance of making it into the finalists...what with all the blatant plagiarism, off-topic spam, and outright crap.

If the judges can fairly sift through all of it.

And I've gotta say, Titan D...your design is growing on me. I'd love to see a variant with shorter nacelles at some point.

So I live in Maryland and can't submit a design. Which is really too bad, because although I'm no graphics whiz, I think I could draw a ship on a piece of toilet paper and have it be better than 75% of what's been submitted.

I'm wondering if some of the people who have submitted designs actually know that the design needs to be original, not something they've found from the web. I'm also wondering if the judges will be smart enough to know when some of the submissions are not original.

I would hope some of them are being flagged with the "offensive" function by people who recognize them.

Wouldn't be surprised if that feature is broken anyway.
Using it does result in a message, but also throws you back to the general index page. In other words, if you want to flag multiple entries you have to go through all those steps every time until you can flag the next image.

I wouldn't put it past the spammers to be doing that to legitimate entries.

Still gonna submit mine, though, once it's done. Like the lottery lady says, you can't win if you don't play. ;)

By the way, has anyone been able to determine if there is any ryme or reason to the size at which images are displayed? At first I thought they were all limited to a certain pixel height but that seems to vary as well. I've seen some that, when you click on them, actually display smaller than their thumbnails! I'd really hate to do all this work on my submission only to have it show up the size of a postage stamp, especially when there's no chance to resubmit without violating the contest rules.

EDIT - I think I actually just answered my own question. It looks like the thumbnails in the ribbon at the bottom are all fixed at 103x88 pixels. The preview image in the top center appears to allow image sizes up to 999x247 pixels. Finally, when you click a preview image to get the (usually) larger windowed image, it seems to max out at 700x335 pixels.

So, what's the best image size to submit? Well, from what I understand, the upload tool limits you on file size but not image size, so I presume the images are being dynamically resized for display in the gallery. Therefore, what really matters is the aspect ratio. If you want your image to display as big as possible in the preview, though slightly smaller in the pop-up window, use a width/height ratio of 4.04:1. If you want to use all the available space in the pop-up window, use 2.09:1.

That's my best estimate, anyway.

I don't think the site is updating properly, either.

^^ There's even a forum thread where someone complained that his entry is showing the wrong image.

Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to have the cleaning lady write the code for that contest site. :D

Perhaps someone should tell Intel the contest their proudly sponsoring is the Internet equivalent of a beauty show almost exclusively filled with Thai lady boys that's being held in the back room of a service station.

I'm a little unclear on how the judging is structured (and yes, I read the rules). So the top 25 designs by public vote move on to the next phase of closed judging? Because it seems like there are a number of ineligable designs in that top bracket, as well as...how can I put this kindly? Garbage. Yeah. That's pretty kind, I think. That's what I don't get about the voting system. I'm surprised they've incorporated something like that, at all.
